The Messiah was not despised in the OT because The Messiah had not come yet. But when He did, many of the Jews did not recognize Jesus as being the Messiah so were resentful of Jesus who people were claiming Him to be the Messiah or chosen one.

Remember the crown of thorns on Jesus head was to mock him by saying to them Heres your King of the Jews… well here I’ll let the scriptures say it.

Matthew 27:29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.

Jesus did not like what the Pharisees were doing in making so many laws that no one was able to meet. They were adding law upon law and making it very hard to be a faithful Jew. Then they were building up riches and buying and selling in the temples turning it into a den of thieves. These are the things that angered God about Jerusalem which was supposed to be a very holy place yet it was getting lost in it’s riches, yet God still loved them and made a covenant with them and is beholden to that because God doesn’t break His promises. The covenant to bring them to eternal life in the end Jesus the Messiah will be revealed to them as Jesus will be revealed to all of us as the Messiah. The Royal and Priestly King, Lord of all creation, not just of the Jews, but of the whole universe.

I combined both of your questions into 1 post. Hope you dont’ mind.
Both are important questions and worthy of their own threads.
But I think we should stick to the situation at hand.

In post #17, you stated “if you don’t think Jesus was despised, i have to question what bible you are reading.”

My response is, leaving Isaiah 53 aside for the moment, that nowhere in the OT does it state that the Messiah (Jesus being the Messiah) will be despised. Israel and the Jewish people were despised throughout the OT and that Isiah 53 is another Chapter of the OT that continues this fact.

If you can point out the chapters and verses in the OT that shows Jesus would be despised, that would help me believe.

So my question is, where else in the OT does it say that Jesus would be despised?

i’m not sure why you’re asking. how does it relate to your original question? there are many prophesies of Christ in the old testament. which ones do you not think are who He was in the new?

Yes. The messiah was not despised for whatever reason in the OT. I think it would also be fair to say that in the NT, Jesus did have his enemies, but from the time he started preaching until a week before his death, he certainly had the masses of people following him as shown in the various books of the NT.

MARK 3:7-9

To understand Chapter 53, we must understand the surrounding chapters.

Have you read Chapter 52? It’s only 15 verses long.
13. Behold My servant shall prosper; he shall be exalted and lifted up, and he shall be very high**. Isaiah is clearly speaking of Israel (the Jewish people)

Look at Chapter 54. It’s only 17 verses long.
17. Any weapon whetted against you shall not succeed, and any tongue that contends with you in judgment, you shall condemn; this is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their due reward from Me, says the Lord. Isaiah is clearly speaking of Israel (the Jewish people)

In both chapters surrounding Chapter 53, God is speaking of the redemption of Israel (the Jewish people)

With this knowledge at hand, do you still say Isaiah 53 is speaking about the Messiah?

Okay so keep reading about Jesus in Isaiah 53, Isaiah is prophesying and speaking the Word of God.

4 Surely he has borne our infirmities
and carried our diseases;
yet we accounted him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions,
crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole,
and by his bruises we are healed.

What has the Lord done for us? He bore our infirmities on the cross and by His wounds we are healed so we might receive the mercy of God and be with Him forevermore.

Now see this prophesy fulfilled in this scripture.

1 Peter 2:24
“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

Don’t forget that the more Jesus was loved by His followers, the more Our King was a threat to those the earthly rulers who wanted power in their hands

From the start Jesus was rejected as seen in King Herod looking for the child King to kill so Mary and Joseph had to flee to Egypt. In the end, Jesus was killed. So though He was loved by many, many more did not understand that Jesus was the Messiah and mocked and killed Jesus because He did not deny that.

Jesus said this of the World and why we might feel the same because of what we believe in.

People praised to the mountains to see Gods glory…Zion was the mountain which was the stronghold of King David. It was considered a holy dwelling where the Lord was found. Zion was associated with the temple mount was where Jesus preached… Do you see where this is going? The entire Isaiah 52, 53 and 54 is prophesy about Jesus and the coming of the Kingdom which is here now wherever God is… The Church is the new Isreal and our final destination will be heavenly Jerusalem, the Holy City…Not Jerusalem the city on earth but in heaven…**

Don’t you think his words were intended to be significant for his hearers as he died on the cross, pointing to verses they would have been quite familiar with as they watched the words of the Psalm coming to reality before their eyes?

Chapter 52 contrasts the degraded state of the Jewish people throughout history to it’s ultimate state of redemption.

Up until now, all the unclean people have been getting up in their faces and never leaving them alone. But this will change.

As I’ve stated above, Isaiah Chapter 52 speaks of what she has gone through and what she will become. What God says He is going to do can be done by God. It says nothing of the son of God.

At the time of the messianic age, nations will be startled and kings shall shut their mouths. Why? Because Israel (the Jewish people) will have risen.
ISAIAH 62:2-3
2 And the nations will see your righteousness and all the kings your glory, and you will be called by a new name which the mouth of the Lord will designate. 3 You will also be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
So far its all God and Israel.
Look around Isaiah and what he says about Israel…
ISAIAH 45:25
25“In the LORD all the offspring of Israel will be justified and will glory.”
ISAIAH 49:23
Kings will be your foster fathers and queens your nursing mothers. With their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you and lick the dust of your feet; and you shall know that I am the Lord: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.
ISAIAH 60:1-3
1 Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. 2 For behold, darkness will cover the earth, and deep darkness the peoples, but the Lord will rise upon you, and His glory will appear upon you. 3 And nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.

It was Israel that was despised and hated. And God is saying that it is Israel that will rise in the messianic age and it will shock the world.
ISAIAH 60:14-15

Up to this point there haven’t been any words that have been introduced that requires Jesus. We still only have God and Israel.
Throughout the entire OT we have Israel referred to as servant. Here are but 2 example, there are others…
ISAIAH 41:8-9
8 "But you Israel, My servant, Jacob who I have chosen, descendant of Abraham My friend;
9 You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called from its remotest parts, and said to you, you are My servant, I have chosen you and not rejected you."
PSALM 136:22
“A heritage to** Israel his servant,** for his loving-kindness is everlasting.”

Isaiah 54 is a continuation of 52 and 53. To put frosting on the cake, examine the last verse.
17 No weapon that is fashioned against you shall prosper,

As we have learned from the Chapter 52, the Jewish people are the servants of the lord.
Isaiah is speaking of the age of the messiah.
Israel will rise in all of God’s glory.

The entire Isaiah 52, 53 and 54 is prophesy about Jesus and the coming of the Kingdom which is here now wherever God is… The Church is the new Isreal and our final destination will be heavenly Jerusalem, the Holy City…Not Jerusalem the city on earth but in heaven…

It’s a Psalm about King David. Why did Jesus say “My God…”
1 hypothesis goes like this: Jesus only thought he was the messiah:
At the time he was crucified, he did not say “Mission Accomplished” or “TOUCHDOWN!”
He thought he was the messiah and did not understand why God was allowing him to be killed.
I’m not saying that is a correct interpretation, but it is one interpretation.

Why do you suppose Jesus uttered, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” as his dying words?

Read Psalm 22.

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer;
and by night, but find no rest.
3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
4 In you our ancestors trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried, and were saved;
in you they trusted, and were not put to shame.
6 But I am a worm, and not human;
scorned by others, and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock at me;
they make mouths at me, they shake their heads;

Don’t you think his words were intended to be significant for his hearers as he died on the cross, pointing to verses they would have been quite familiar with as they watched the words of the Psalm coming to reality before their eyes?
