Hey,

I’m not a Christian, but I was wondering about how you Christians reasoned this:

How is Jesus the “Messiah”, but Buddha, Mohummud, Lao-Tzu etc. not?

Christianity is the only religion whose prophet is also their God.

I think a more relevant question is, why would Buddha, Mohammed or Lao-Tzu be considered a messiah? As you mentioned Christianity is the faith in the one, eternal, infinite God made man. Buddha, Mohammed and Lao-Tzu were just men.

None of the others claimed to be God, none of them fore-filled Prophecy, none of them were described as the Son of God, nor claimed kinship with God.
& only Christ was confirmed to have risen from the dead.

The Old Testament Foretold of Jesus, & the New Testament documents his Life, Death & Resurrection. None of their writings do that either.

Perhaps it would behoove you to read the Bible at least the NT to gain a greater knowledge & understanding of Christ. Hopes this helps. 🙂

Jesus is the Messiah to the Muslims too. Thats two votes for Jesus as Messiah.

Lao Tzu and Buddha never made promises of their return on a day of judgement.

hi panthiest. Jesus rose from the dead. the others, well, lets just say…they ARE dead.😃 this should be an interesting thread my friend. peace.🙂

To a believer, a non-believer is someone who chooses to live a life without a greater purpose. We are foolish not to live by the word and rules of God and even more so to question them. They see Atheists as trying to re-interpret the laws as anti-religious and re-write our religious history and heritage.

🙂

We must understand what the Messiah is and is not. The Messiah was a Jewish concept. He is to be the savior of the World. But, he must be a JEW!

There goes the rest of them, leaving Jesus.

Hey,

So, I see where you guys are coming from. Buddha and Mohummud never claimed to be messiahs… If I may rephrase, how come Jesus was divine, and Buddha, Muhammud, and Lao Tzu were not?

And while you may make them, I’d prefer no arguments be made from Christian doctrine (i.e. Jesus rose from the dead; that is only “proven” by Christian doctrine). I’d prefer a philosophical argument. You may make an argument from Christian doctrine if you’d like, or think it might be good enough to convince me of Jesus’ divinity 😉 Thanks!

Peace!

Siddhartha Gautama, Mohammed and Lao Tzu also never made any claim to divinity as far as I’m aware.

because none of those other religions arose out of a prophetic tradition of a Messiah, what the word really means, the Anointed One of God, that is, the one chosen sent by God to sacrifice himself for the people to save them from sin and death through his own suffering, death and resurrection. That term has a specific meaning in Christian theology, and in Judaism whose scripture and tradition contains the origin of that prophecy and from whom the meaning is drawn. Islam does not teach that the Prophet Mohammed is God, quite the opposite, that God alone is God. Buddha never claimed to be a god nor have his followers, he is seen rather as the enlightened one. Don’t know the rest you are thinking of but you would have to prove that the specific concept of Messiah has been taught and fulfilled in those belief systems.

before one attempts to compare Christianity with other world religions one must not only demonstrate an understanding of at least the basics of Christian belief, but also the core beliefs of those other systems.

I’m trying to phrase my question correctly 😉

I guess I’m wondering why only Jesus is God, why only he claimed to be/his followers made him God, while Buddha(’)s and Muhammud(‘s) did not, AND did not acknowledge Jesus’ divinity.

Peace, sorry about the vague nature of the question! 😉

Muhammed went out of his way to say that he wasn’t.

I am not sure about Buddha.

I hate to say it this way because you won’t like it, but Jesus claimed it because he is God and the others did not because they were not

I am not sure about Buddha.
Buddha could not possibly have stated that Jesus was not God, he had no opportunity to acknowledge Jesus’ Divinity being that he had been dead 500 years before the Incarnation.

Because God is one. Jesus is the full, hominization of the one God. He wasn’t just some inspired man like a prophet. Rather all of the eternal, unknowable, immortal God is present as man.

Buddha was simply a man who was enlightened. He realized that all things are vanity. Buddha represents the opposite motion from that of Christ. Christ represents a kenosis in which God becomes man whereas Buddha represents a kind of ascent in which the world is abandoned for the sake of the divine.

Buddha could not possibly have stated that Jesus was not God, he had no opportunity to acknowledge Jesus’ Divinity being that he had been dead 500 years before the Incarnation.
I thought the question was if Buddha claimed divinity for himself

It would be imteresting to know if Jesus claimed to be the Messiah. Perhaps he never did, in his own words. If so then some reference from the BibleNT may be given, preferrably from the four gospels.

Jesus was the promised Messiah for the Jews. He had come at the right time to the right people.

Budha lived 500 years before Jesus. It is learnt that he knew about Jesus. How did he know?? It could only be if he was a man of God. Budha had predicted to his people about the ariival in his area of a White Messiah ( Bagwa Mathea)… Budha promised his followers about the coming of a White Messiah.

Muhammad came 600 years after Jesus. Muhamamd knew all about Messiah. Muhammad was not a Messiah. He admitted that Jesus son of Mary was the right Messiah.
He also promised his people about the coming of Masih ibne Maryam (Son of Maryam) in his nation. That news was given to the Muslims with an oath of Allah that Masiha will definitely come in the Ummah.

Please remember that Masiha and the word Ibne Maryam (i.e. Jesus) is a proverbial and symbolic word every where. It stands for some one who is pure and cares and kind and gentle and loving and a healer of diseases etc. The word is used in Urdu poetry as such.

I thought the question was if Buddha claimed divinity for himself
Sorry mate I was actually replying to ‘‘pantheistsrule’’ when they asked why Buddha and Mohammed denied Jesus’ divinity.

I couldn’t have answered that better myself. Except that He is the promised Messiah; John the Baptist was the prophet. 🙂
