Dear Brothers and Sisters,

My sister-in-law’s husband landed in prison earlier this year, something that has devastated her family. She has two young children, 10 and 15. In prison, her husband met a man who introduced him to the Bible. Since most of my wife’s family never truly practiced its Catholic faith, God was never central in their lives. So, my sister-in-law started attending the same Bible study group that man was attending when he was freed about four months ago.

Well, the group is really different to what I’d seen before. I thought the Mormon church was strict, this group was very, very rigid. They are told to follow the Law of Moses, observing all the Jewish holidays, not eating pork or seafood, etc. The group is called Amishav, which in Hebrew means “My People Returns.” The founder is from Cancun, and he lived in Israel for several years. He is trying to make all Christians return to Judaism and to observe the Law of Moses, but with faith in Jesus as the Messiah. They argue that the Catholic Church altered all beliefs with pagan Roman beliefs, etc. They also don’t believe in the Holy Trinity. Here’s the link to the founder’s main group in Cancun: amishavcancun.org/index.php

Are any of you familiar with groups like this one? Are these groups considered Messianic Jews?

The worst part of this is that my sister-in-law is psychologically abusing her mother, my mother-in law, who is a Cathequist, and a devout Catholic. My sister-in-law tells her that she’s going to go to Hell, and that due to her devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, my mother-in-law is condemning all of her children. My sister-in-law has become a different person, very critical of others, always challenging others’ beliefs based on the Bible, etc.

What can I do to help my mother-in-law?

Thanks!

I suggest that you just be there for her – phone and visit her as much as you can. Pray the rosary, and tell her you’re doing so.

Howdy,

I’m fairly familiar with the various degrees of Messianic Judaism, so called, due to a year exploring that prior to realizing the RCC was the way to go.

One thing that I’ve noticed, for what reason I have no idea, is the influx of Hispanics into the MJ scene. This may or may not be due to the rise in the “rediscovery” of Judaism through Sephardim in their home countries, but I honestly don’t know. The other thing to consider is these groups are often led by men who at some point were in the evangelical milieu and wanted to get back to “tradition”.

It’s also important to note that there is, as with all Protestant sects, and MJ is very much a Protestant derived sect despite that protesting otherwise, is there is NO central leadership.

When you combine legalism with no chain of command or recourse, you get the potential for cults, if not the basic cults of personality we see peppering the landscape with their suits and oratory skills.

Your SIL is most definitely in a cult. It is not Christian. It is a rehashing of the same junk that St. Paul addressed constantly. It’s the same attitude, sans-Trinitarian belief, that St. Peter displayed prior to the dream where God said nothing is unclean.

Given that she is in the sola scriptura mindset (apparently forgetting that the Catholic Church put together the Bible as we have it), it might be best to study up on the Messianic Jewish culture overall, as well as Scriptural basis which destroys that stupid mindset.

The lack of belief in the Trinity is a new one to me, as I’ve never seen such a belief take hold in the MJ sects, though I’m sure it exists.

What the cult leader has done is get really well versed in modern Jewish thought, while still maintaining a belief in Jesus, though wholly heretical in its historical veracity as far as Christian doctrine. In reality, it’s not Messianic Judaism at all in a pure sense, nor even in the culturally accepted sense. It’s just a tick over Pharisaical Judaism, modernly known as Talmudic/Rabbinic Judaism.

I’m curious though, if they’re following all the OT laws, what are they planning to do for Passover?

Prayer for your MIL and a good bit of study for your SIL will help. Perhaps getting some materials together which show the fulfilled nature of Jewish worship in the Mass will help as well.

Regardless, your SIL is in a cult and despite the semblance of history on “their” side, they have none which is not stolen, made up, or outright abolished.

To illustrate my above points, here are some local “congregations” in Colorado Springs:

Sephardim led/anti-Catholic posts in the “rabbi’s” corner (totally ignorant of history too):

aliyahcongregation.com/history.html
Aliyah Congregation was founded in 2005.
Rabbi Oswald Garagorry, D.Phil., along with his wife Sonia, M. Ed., teaches and serves the congregation with love, prayer and dedication to Scripture. Rabbi Oswald and Sonia were both born in Brazil to Jewish mothers into Sephardic families. They emigrated to the United States in 1975 and have since become U.S. citizens.** Rabbi Oswald’s strong desire to understand God and man brought him to realize that his view of Scripture **did not match Judaism or Christianity as they are practiced in modern times. He pursued his desire for truth by studying for 12 years for rabbinical ordination with a conservative Rabbi and was ordained from Jerusalem in 2004.
Well, thank God that the fires from the gates of Hell prevailing against the Church were finally quenched by the great Rabbi Garagorry and his wife, ever ready with the fire hose reaching back to the Jordan River.

Shalom Aleichem from Sha’arey Tzion. We are a Messianic Synagogue in Colorado Springs, Colorado. **We invite you to come worship the God of Lord Messiah Yeshua with us. **
Linguistically, it appears they are placing the Son below the Father, effectively denying the Trinity in its truthful nature. They’re going to worship “The God of Lord Messiah Yeshua”… no worship of Jesus? Just Hashem?
Well, thank goodness these Gentiles were able to steal back the concept of “5 pillars” from mohammedanism… wait, there are no “5 pillars” in Judaism OR Christianity in any official context. That’s islamic.

“Reb” Rittenhouse, not Jewish, is the leader. He also works full time for Focus on the Family. Ray Schwartz, Jewish believer in Jesus, adds weight to outsiders. Otherwise, it’d be a bunch of Gentiles standing around unable to correctly pronounce the “ch” sounds.

Interestingly enough, Reb Rittenhouse likes to teach as if the Talmud is more than rabbinic commentaries, as if these things have any weight. My memoirs have as much weight, spiritually speaking, as the Talmud. For those unaware, the Mishnah/Talmud are not even able to be traced as far back as the NT writings. The Mishna started somewhere in the early 3rd century, with the Talmud taking full shape somewhere around A.D. 500; these writings are WELL after the establishment of the Catholic Church, and in many cases reflect a reaction TO the Church rather than simply being separate doctrine. Here he is totally bungling the concept of Original Sin via Talmudic basis:

He seems to be engaging in mixing Gnostic logic with a whole slew of misunderstanding of other concepts.

Another: beartraxfellowship.com

Their “Anti-semitism” page is more anti-Catholic than anything, and highly out of context at that! It provides no citations, and is written like a whiny student in High School wrote it. Its first charge comes from the “Epistle of Barnabas” (newadvent.org/cathen/02299a.htm). Funny, but that isn’t even recognized as legitimate scripture : beartraxfellowship.com/Anti-Semitism.html

Another local, and Sephardim based congregation:

rootsofthemessiah.com/visiting.htm
Men wear a kippah at all times and a tallit gadol in the synagogue during Shachrit, Torah service, and Mussaf. (Tallit gadols and kippahs are available in the lobby for visitors…) Most of the men wear a suit jacket, dress shirt, and suit pants.
Guess they didn’t get the Pauline memo about men covering their heads:
1 Be followers of me, as I also am of Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that in all things you are mindful of me and keep my ordinances as I have delivered them to you. 3 But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ: and the head of the woman is the man: and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered disgraces his head. 5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head not covered disgraces her head: for it is all one as if she were shaven. 6 For if a woman be not covered, let her be shorn. But if it be a shame to a woman to be shorn or made bald, let her cover her head. 7 The man indeed ought not to cover his head: because he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man. 8 For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. 9 For the man was not created for the woman: but the woman for the man. 10 Therefore ought the woman to have a power over her head, because of the angels. 11 But yet neither is the man without the woman, nor the woman without the man, in the Lord. 12 For as the woman is of the man, so also is the man by the woman: but all things of God.
1 Cor 11:1-12
HaShem has given us commands regarding what we may and may not eat and detailing what He considers “food” and what is “not-food” in the Bible. We are completely kosher to those Biblical standards including the “separation of milk and meatâ€, having all kosher dishware, appliances and kitchens, requiring all processed foods and all meats must be hechshered, and all raw fruits and vegetables must be bug/insect free according to visual inspection after washing. If you have any questions please contact us. If you are a guest, please come and enjoy; there is no requirement to bring any food.
Or the fact that hard chargin’ St. Peter himself found out, from God, that kosher eating is no longer in effect:
9 And on the next day, whilst they were going on their journey and drawing near to the city, Peter went up to the higher parts of the house to pray, about the sixth hour. 10 And being hungry, he was desirous to taste somewhat. And as they were preparing, there came upon him an ecstasy of mind. 11 And he saw the heaven opened and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great linen sheet let down by the four corners from heaven to the earth: 12 Wherein were all manner of four-footed beasts and creeping things of the earth and fowls of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him: Arise, Peter. Kill and eat. 14 But Peter said: Far be it from me. For I never ate anything that is common and unclean. 15 And the voice spoke to him again the second time: That which God has cleansed, do not call common. 16 And this was done thrice. And presently the vessel was taken up into heaven.
Acts 10: 9-16

Furthermore, they seem to forget that circumcision is replaced by baptism. As such, all things which a circumcised person were to be held to in a legalistic manner, are no longer.

One doesn’t even need to leave the Bible to show how out of touch with scriptural Christianity these cults are, much less even approach non-Scriptural Patristic writings…

Thanks, jonbhorton!!! You have given me so much material to study!
Thank you so much for your time and advice.
