I never listen to metal, but I used to when I was a lot younger. I didn’t pay much attention to this song. But now you guys have gotten it stuck in my head and it makes me sad to think about how many people who were bought up too strictly grow into troubled people who can’t forgive and be forgiven.😦

I think the inspiration for “Unforgiven” was James Hetfield’s very repressive upbringing as a Christian Scientist.
That’s what remember hearing.

Metallica is one of my favorite bands…in fact, 4 years ago, DH and I flew all the way to Vegas to see them in concert. 😃 (we had missed the show in Cleveland and wanted to see them SO BAD. Plus, made an excellent excuse to go to Vegas, lol…it was worth it!)

I remember watching the music video as a kid…

I don’t listen to a lot of rock, but I absolutely love this song, and the II one too. To be honest, I’ve never even searched for meaning in it. I just love the music itself.

Now that I think about it, I always wrote the song off as being about a boy who couldn’t live up to his father and has now turned the tables on him. I guess that doesn’t fit in with the video.

DH and I disagree over the meaning of this song. We sang it on karaoke and I had never heard it before. I thought it sounded like the guy probably killed the girl (words like “bury” and talking about “never leaving”–I forget the exact phrases–and some other dark imagery throughout). But DH says that he’s never thought of the song that way but rather thinks it about the ups and downs in their relationship. He is teasing me that I’m looking too far into this, but I am pretty sure I am right!😃 Am I?
as far as I know this is a gothic song with vampire imagery.

Unforgiven II
Lay beside me, tell me what they’ve done
Speak the words I wanna hear, to make my demons run
The door is locked now, but it’s open if you’re true
If you can understand the me, than I can understand the you

Lay beside me, under wicked sky
The black of day, dark of night, we share this paralyze
The door cracks open, but there’s no sun shining through
Black heart scarring darker still, but there’s no sun shining through
No, there’s no sun shining through
No, there’s no sun shining…

What I’ve felt, what I’ve known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you…

What I’ve felt, what I’ve known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I’m the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?

Lay beside me, this won’t hurt I swear
She loves me not, she loves me still, but she’ll never love again
She lay beside me, But she’ll be there when I’m gone
Black heart scarring darker still, yes she’ll be there when I’m gone
Yes, she’ll be there when I’m gone
Dead sure she’ll be there…

What I’ve felt, what I’ve known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you…

What I’ve felt, what I’ve known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I’m the one who waits for you
Or are you unforgiven too?

Lay beside me, tell me what I’ve done
The door is closed, so are you’re eyes
But now I see the sun, now I see the sun
Yes now I see it

What I’ve felt, what I’ve known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you…

What I’ve felt, what I’ve known
Sick and tired, I stand alone
Could you be there, 'cause I’m the one who waits,
The one who waits for you…

Oh what I’ve felt, what I’ve known
Turn the pages, turn the stone
Behind the door, should I open it for you… (So I dub thee
unforgiven…)

Oh, what I’ve felt…
Oh, what I’ve known…

I take this key (never free…)
And I bury it (never me…) in you
Because you’re unforgiven too…

Never free…
Never me…
'Cause you’re unforgiven too…
Oh

It seems to me to be about to people who cannot trust eachother but both grew up “unforgiven”. They are learning to trust, albeit in a dark way.

However, since we are on the subject (sort of), has anyone ever looked at the imagery and description of sin in “Until it sleeps”?

Just wondering

A lone Raven

Sorry Rayvn, I don’t see the vampire imagery. 🤷
I don’t see it either. Metallica was around looonnng before Goth became popular. They’re a gritty metal band, I definitely do not see them as Goth. Although that’s the cool thing about music, lyrics can take on whatever meaning you most relate to.
Although for obvious vampire themes Concrete Blond’s “Bloodletting” album would be right up your ally Ravyn.

I was talking about the lyrics to the song not the band. Metallica also sings Whisky In The Jar and that is not exactly heavy metal either is it? I like all kinds of music, including some Goth, but if you are looking at Goth as a culture I think it has been around a tad longer than Metallica…LOL like say since Gothic times? (And I bought Concrete Blonde’s Bloodletting when it first came out in 1990–nearly 20 years ago!–still their best --check out the samples:

amazon.com/Bloodletting-Concrete-Blonde/dp/B000000QFR )

I said overtones…the darkness of it and the unforgiven concept–very vampirish. Concrete Blonde is blatantly vampirish. It is just my opinion. Gosh I bet you all didn’t eat Count Chocula cereal either did you? LOL 😃

The Metallica remake of Whisky in the Jar sounds metal to me, just not the screaming type of heavy metal that is popular now.😛

I don’t see the vampirishness(is this a word) in the song, but lyrics can have different meanings to different people.

Yeah, Metallica is metal AND music. Some of the stuff coming out now… it’s like, wow, you can strum a guitar and rupture your vocal cords… ooooh, real talent!

OK, so I want to start a metal band. I am a musician who has been doing the Chicago music scene for about 10 years. My question is:

Should I sell out immediately with a metal ballad, or should I wait a couple of albums before blatantly feeding my family?

God Bless

Jon

I don’t think that most heavy metal bands today do ballads. I can’t recall a Slipknot ballad, for instance.🤷 Come to think of it, I can’t think of an AC/DC ballad either, and they were popular during the hair metal era(they were not part of that time period)

I wasn’t picking on vampire themes I have Bloodletting on cassette tape (from back in the day) that has been well played over the years -although my favorite song on the album is “Joey” -which is not vampire-ish.😛 Count Chocula? -any cereal with chocolate is a friend of mine. My hubby (who is 36) still is vampire every year when we take our daughter trick or treating. (Not the cape and tacky plastic teeth kind more of the Lost Boys (if you know that movie) kind.😉

The reason I said I might be projecting is because my hubby and I both had “unforgiven” childhoods. Which is why I relate to that particular song very well.
If you see vapire-ish themes that’s ok too. Songs are like art and be interpretted in many ways.

Heh heh… ya never know about us crazy Catholic mamas!

I’ve been listening to Metallica since my brother first discovered them. That’s at least 15 years…

My DH loves Metallica, too, so I have gotten very familiar with their work. There are some songs I really love, and some I could really do without. (So What comes to mind…yuck.)
YAY!! Now I dont feel like the only “Crazy Catholic Mamma!!” I love me some Metallica too!! I too, first heard it from my bro! Dh is a drummer and a music freak, so he and dd watch those documentaries on VH1 about the bands and such. The other day “Crazy Train” by Ozzy came on and dd was singing along! I asked dh, “Hon why does she know the lyrics to Crazy Train?”, and he changed the subject real quick!!

My nine year old sometimes sings “I AM IRON MAN.” Only a child with a mother who likes heavy metal would know that song.

Oh goodie, the lyrics! I bolded the parts that to me seemed like you could read into it that he killed the girl. She’ll never love again? Reminds me of those psycho plots in thriller movies where a jealous significant other says, “Well if I can’t have her, then no one can have her!” or “If she doesn’t love me, she will love no one ever again!” 🤷 🙂

Anyway, you all know much more about this than I do. For one, I’m not familiar with the first “Unforgiven” song. But I just wanted to let you know what I was talking about 😃

Sorry for digging up this old thread, but I was gone for Lent and wanted to see what happened in this discussion!

Metallicas Unforgiven song has nothing about killing someone, it’s about going through life and living with the mistakes that he has made, and he feels that that were so bad that they are unforgivable. Hence the name of the song, Unforgiven.

The sequel song Unforgiven 2 is a more detailed version of its predecessor except in the sequel its about finding others that feel the same as he does, and confiding in them.

All Metallicas music as of other music by other bands leaves it up to the listener to come to their own conclusions as to what there songs mean.

Both the Unforgiven’s by Metallica are brilliant songs.

Unforgiven, is about people who are different from society and hence are seen as outcasts and the impact it has on their lives.

It’s been a while since I heard Unforgiven II, but I believe it is more to do with relationships.

THe beauty however is the song has different meanings to different people, so take it as you will.

Cheers

Incorrect. It’s about how society’s views are imposed on people, it talks about people who don’t embrace the social view and hence are outcasts.

So anyone hear the new Metallica songs? I have and I’m totally digging on them. “The Day That Never Comes” and “My Apocolypse” are really good. They sound like old school Metallica and “My Apocolypse” is really hard and fast. i’m totally psyched for the new album next month.

And BTW, the new album will have a song called “Unforgiven III” on it.

😃
