Thank God for St. Patrick for bringing Catholicism to the pagans of Ireland! He acted in the name of the Catholic Church and was a wonderful example of Christianity. We have reaped the rewards of his work for almost 1700 years.

Over the years some people have acted in the name of the Catholic Church while furthering their own agenda. That doesn’t make it right or the Catholic Church wrong.

Thank you for acknowledging that the Catholic missionaries have been doing their work for a long time.
No problem…but I can not understand the catholic problem with mormon missionaries when all churches have missionaries. My daughter is now a mormon missionary. She is having a nice time on her mormon mission. They are only doing what they think is right and they want to share their faith. People can always say no thank you.

But for many people in the past, they could not say no thank you. Politics ruled the roost. Just look at finland, once a catholic country but then the king and queen of sweden decided to follow luther and finland became lutheran. What choice did the people have…they couldn’t say no without risking severe punishment.

And what about the pagans that came across catholic missionaries…could they say no thank you…? Interesting question.

What about the people at Mountain Meadow, could they say no thank you to the Mormons, interesting question.

St. Patrick maybe had a few priests with him. It is a fascinating story actually. I like to read about people in Church history that actually served the Lord as they should. He never used force from what I have read in a book that gave a historical account of his life (a non-Catholic source). He did not have the men or the means to spread the gospel in a forceful manner.

The problem that I have with the Mormon missionaries is that their message is from Joseph Smith and not from the Church that Jesus Christ established while He was here on earth. The One He promised would be with us until the end. Your missionaries are telling the world that Christ’s Church fell into apostasy. What a terrible message to send out! That Jesus’ promise could not stand up to the arguments and disagreements of man!

I agree that many people act in the name of God to force their agenda. However, you can’t blame a church for that. Jesus Christ never would have wanted that and it is not of Him. Men have free will. Some use it to spread the Gospel others to further their own gains. Interestingly enough, it all comes out in the end. History allows us to look back and see the choices people have made and the outcomes of those decisions.

That is why we all need to study history for ourselves and not take someone else’s word for how things played themselves out.

Many men have done bad things in the name of God, but many have done good. That’s life. Good and bad. God knew that and sent His Son and the Holy Spirit to guide us through the rough waters.

btw - I find the LDS missionary efforts very interesting. I like the idea of sending out young men to teach (and learn!) and sometimes the young women.

I object to the message. Like I have said before here on CAF - can you imagine if we could combine the organization of the lay people like the LDS do with the Truth of the Catholic message? It would be incredible!

No church is without a black eye. Therefore, how can one accuse another of apostasy?

You have to love the message that the mormon missionaries sent when they desecrated that Catholic shrine in Colorado, and posted pics on the internet. Or when some missionaries climbed on top of a statue of Buddha had took some pics (Spent a year in a Cambodian jail)

Those were some messages weren’t they?

Yeah, I guess they were not busy enough with their missionary work?

Also, I think there is a very strong “anti-statue” feeling in the LDS church and perhaps it lead to these young men having no respect for other religions use of these things.

Although at WalMart you can buy statues/replicas of the SLC temple…

If a Catholic had gone to SLC and desecrated a temple, we would not hear the end of it from our LDS posters who always claim the Mormons are victims.

You know, people really do stupid things sometimes. No church is immune to it I guess!

Aren’t the missionaries priests?
btw - what does elder mean?

Speaking of SLC, the Catholic Cathedral is just gorgeous!
It is gorgeous! It is one of my favorite places to visit. I will admit the SLC Temple is eye catching as well. I may have my theological differences with the LDS but they can build some nice structures as well.
Back on point…the Cathedral is AWESOME!!

Answersplease - I am agreeing that the LDS church has its fair share of problems and should not accuse the Catholic Church of being in apostasy based on the actions of its early members.

Oh yea, I remember that discussion from yesteryear. But I guess no catholic has desecrated a jewish cemetary or some other religious symbol. People are far from perfect.

What does the title “elder” signify?
Do the young women go around the world on their mission and knock on doors, or is their mission structured differently than the men?
What are female missionaries called? (title)
Are the young women gone for two years as well?
Do they return home with a “hero’s welcome?”
Can the young women perform any sacraments/ordinances? I don’t think they do, but don’t know for sure. What do the young women do on their missions?

Yes, we are ALL far from perfect. Therefore, it is wrong to claim that Catholics are apostates due to their imperfections and that Mormons are “far from perfect” when they do something not guided by the Holy Spirit. Double standard.

Mormons shouldn’t point out we’re in Apostasy when their church by their own definition of Apostasy would also be considered Apostate.
