Technically, it is considered a “treatment”. The thing is, if an addict is taking it as directed, following the rules, etc., they can live as functional members of society…People may not ever suspect that they are or have ever been addicts. That part is good. But we can’t escape the fact that the addict is still addicted to a drug as long as they are taking methadone. They are still enslaved. Do you think it’s sinful to be strung out on any drug, even if it’s for the treatment of a “worse” addiction? Or maybe not sinful, but is it moral?
I can only speak for my own experience but it took a while for me to stop messing around, initially. I was on the drug for a while before, I started to follow the prescribed route but I did get there. Truthfully, in my experience it’s better for me to be on methadone than to be on nothing at all because in my City, there’s Fentanyl and Carfentil these are so substances are so dangerous that have the ability to kill me the first time that I used it. Many people are dying from overdoses (142 in Sept 2018, including a close friend of mine).Dealers are pretending that these drugs are other opiates and no one can tell the difference because it’s a powder. I don’t worry about the morals of my medications when the alternative has the ability to take my life but that’s just me. I’ve seen too many die. I also attended AA/NA for 20 yrs and I no longer attend for a multitude of reasons. I disliked that program and it honestly has a very low sucess rate. I have seen thousand of people come through AA/ NA’s doors and most people don’t even stick around for a full year, let alone 20. Those programs felt like punishment for being an addict–my personl feelings. Wanna experience purgatory, go to a meeting. social misfit central.
For myself, this is the lesser of two evils and I was far down the scale so the methadone was not worse than the opiates that I was using. I am able to go to work and have a life that wasn’t possible before. For whatever reason, the methadone also blocks the effects of alcohol–in my case–so I am no longer the raging alcoholic that I was before. I have a new stability. I will say that I know lots of people who get on Methadone for the wrong reasons and they still use drugs on a routine basis, with no desire to quit. I am lucky that after falling off the wagon earlier on, that I have stopped.
