What do you think will happen in the next 25 years with regard to the reception of Holy Communion in the Latin Rite?

Because what this forum really needed was one more thread on COTT vs. CITH.

My answer is “on the tongue”.

Haven’t seen you on CAF in a while!

Let us remember that the question is what you think will happen, not what you want to happen.

On the tongue is outdated and it is a dated fashion from the times where priests thought that ordinary people were not worth of touching God in the Eucharist.

It is a bit childish, dont you think? I guess no one in the first Mass, the Last Supper, used that method.

The orthodox method is even worse, with the 2 species, bread and wine, the same spoon used to everybody.

I think one should be allowed to use the 2 species, bread and wine. You took the species of bread and you wet (english on?) it on the species of wine and took it. As Jesus said, my Flesh and My Blood. But still the Church is reluctant.

I think you need to be more respectful of people’s beliefs.

LOL
How true.
Oh yes, let us all speak about because we choose one way over the other…
If only everyone here who receives the Eucharist came together to realize how to get more people in Church to receive the Eucharist. That is an argument that would be worth making. Because it would lead more souls to heaven. Which is what I thought Jesus meant when he said, “go make disciples of all nations.”

Ach so… genau das, was von der Kirche ausdrücklich verboten ist, wollen Sie doch haben.

BINGO!

And because of that I believe the current Pope (despite her own personal preferences) will make both ways the universal standard worldwide. I think he realizes just how devisive this matter is for some.

Like it or not the HUGE majority choose communion in hand.

“Childish?” Nope. Superior? Nope. Older? Nope. Another valid way? Yep.

That was the case about 10-15 years ago in the parishes I go to, but since then there has been a bigger proportion every year receiving on the tongue. A big proportion of these are young people.

My wife teaches First Communion classes, and each year a bigger proportion of the kids opts for COTT.

And these are definitely not not “conservative” or “traditionalist” parishes!

And I believe there are still some places in the world where the CITH indult has never been issued and the practice has only ever been universal COTT.

I went to a big parish in Rome with a big congregation and Communion was offered ONLY by intinction, so everybody had to receive COTT and nobody batted an eyelid.

Combine all that with several statements recently from the pope and senior cardinals suggesting that COTT is preferable, and it seems that COTT is the way of the future as far as the Church is concerned.

I don’t think so. There is simply no way that the indult for CIH will be repealed in my opinion. CIH is hughly preferred throughout the USA (even by people who were catechized when only COT was allowed.) Normally I would choose that no change will take place but Pope Benedict is cleaning-up a great many loose ends. While he may personally prefer COT I think he might see the wiscom in making both methods the universal standard.

Instead of saying that I am not respectful, just. Period, would you mind to say where and when I was disrespectful? That would be more fair.

And would you mind to explain how is this a belief and not a practice of the various Churches that can be changed at will. For many years I took communion on the tongue without any problems. Sometimes, nowadays, I do.

I thought we were here to discuss things, what means that we do have different opinions, not to attack people !

I am ready to apologize if I attacked other people, not beliefs, which can be attacked (suicide bombs with Muslim idea or martyrdom, human sacrifices, the ideology of the Norwegian killer, Marxist and Nazi beliefs, female circumcision, slavery ). If I attacked someone I am ready to apologize as I should.

Well, well, well, what shall I say?
Things got out of hand for I expressed an opinion.
I like this, I think that is XXX, I prefer that, I expressed all my feelings.
Your answer is pretty strange for it says that if forbidden and other strange suggestions.

Did I say that I do not respect what the Church wants? I do what the Church says to do. In many Churches in Germany, one kneels down in line with the grid and the pries goes along the grid and one receives the Eucharist in tongue. I do exactly as people do, though I could receive in hand.

I think that if one cannot express his feelings, CAF is useless, just follow what the Church says and stop this site.

It is not because I have different feelings that I do not respect what the Church says. I even respect local Traditions. I once went to mass with Chinese people and bowed like them.

“Childish?” Nope. Superior? Nope. Older? Nope. Another valid way? Yep.
Let me explain “childish”: whom do you give food on the mouth? To children and old and sick people. You do not go to a meal and give anyone food in the mouth. That would be considered what I said “childish”.
Neither I think Jesus did to the Apostles: “Take…” he said…That is what I said.
Another valid way? Yep.
I would like to focus on this. Jesus said us “to eat His flesh and drink his blood” and put this as a condition to enter Heaven. I know that in the species of bread is the whole God but nevertheless Jesus instituted the 2 species. It is just another crazy whim of a catholic.

I think that in the U.S., as more and more people develop osteoarthritis of the knees and other joint problems due to the fact that more than 50% of us are obese (including the children), we will see an end to genuflecting and kneeling in the Mass. So many people will be unable to kneel without great pain that the Church will have to find a solution, and the solution will be to make kneeling optional (which it already is). Once it becomes optional, it will fall completely out of use, and only the “traditionalists” will kneel.

As for the OPs topic–I used to think that if I switched from receiving Holy Communion in my hand to receiving on my tongue, that I would experience some kind of major change in my soul, and that the lights would go on and all heaven would smile upon me.

But like many Catholics, I was shy about sticking out my tongue for a priest or EMHC.

Then I had foot surgeries and used crutches, and had no choice but to receive Communion on my tongue. I got into the habit over several months and have continued to receive on my tongue.

And there were no lights and manifestations. All was the same. I can honestly say that I have experienced absolutely NO emotional or spiritual changes as a result of receiving Holy Communion on my tongue. I honestly don’t think it makes one whit of difference.

However, the only times that I have seen Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament dropped was when people, including myself, have received on the tongue. We can argue back and forth that the priests or EMHCs need better training, or the layperson needs better training. Maybe that would help. But I have had several years now of “training” and Jesus was still dropped.

So for this reason alone, I think that the laypeople ought to be very careful about demanding a return to Holy Communion on the tongue as the only alternative. I think that a lot of people would be afraid of dropping Him. I know I am more afraid now, and if I see that the EMHC or priest is shorter than me, I will take no chances and receive in my hand. It really doesn’t matter at all to me, and it makes no difference in Who Jesus is.

Some people prefer communion on the tongue. That may not be your preference, but to call it childish is patronizing.

Edited: I just read your explanation of “childish”.

It may be a language barrier.

Who are you to handle the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in your hand? Who are you to handle God Himself like a cookie?

I’m sorry but quite frankly the laity are not worthy. We are a disrespectful and vile breed. We’ve already crucified Him once, must we continue to do so with our irreverence in church?

For the love of God even the Romans who nailed Him to that tree found reverence in the end when they declared that He was indeed He Who Is!

And I ask you, outdated? This little fashion trend of communion in the hand has only been around for a few decades and is already dying off. Communion on the tongue is not outdated, it is a sacred act of reverence that has stood the test of two millennia in both East and West.
It is a bit childish, dont you think?
No, it is showing due respect to God.

You realise that the Apostles were bishops right?

I think that the Precious Blood should be withheld from the laity. You eat His Body and drink His Blood when you consume Him under the veil of bread.

P.S. Actually, when I think about it, I am wrong. About communion in the hand being a new fashion. It was actually popular with a group of Spaniards a few centuries ago. They didn’t kneel either. They didn’t see why they should… after all they didn’t believe in the Real Presence…
