First,Lisa, thank you for mentioning Suzanna Wesley, one of my personal heroines. She was a great Christian lady.We all need more like her in the world today; she always had the courage of her convictions.
I think that we have to distinguish between (A) what the “social principles” say, & (B)what actual Methodists who show up on Sunday mornings believe. The social principles do indeed treat abortion as a women’s issue. (But then, most average Methodists roll our eyes & groan over the SPs about twice a week, minimum).I have days when running seems like a logical choice…
But I remember that somebody has to take a stand sometime! If every Methodist who is prolife were to decamp, that would leave Methodism in the hands of the  idiots who do things like write page after page of “social principles” , something I consider to be an untenable choice…
I don’t do polls, but judging my own observations, the vast majority of 😉 actual human beings are roughly divided into 3 distinct groups:1, a few random:whacky: liberals who would agree w/the retired pastor you mention;2, a:clapping: not insignificant # like myself who are outspokenly prolife, &3, a :o 😦 lot of people who call themselves “prochoice” until they are faced with the fact that the Bible does not support them–at which point, they become (ever so quietly, but genuinely) disturbed over the amount of disinformation that they have been handed by the abortion industry.
Basic biology is indeed one of the most powerful weapons. (Something to keep in mind…).

While I am sickened by this news, I am not surprised. I grew up in the “old” Methodist Church, and the “new” one bears no resemblance to it. Most mainline Protestant churhces have become more and more secularized over the years…a sad fact.

I agree. Quite honestly I used to be ‘pro-choice’ because frankly I was ignorant and swallowed the “it’s my body” line. When you go to the Methodist official website they sort of wishy wash…gee we don’t like abortion but we’re too wimpy to actually take a stand. I think an education on basic biology (it’s someone ELSE’S body you are going to destroy) as well as asking where “a woman’s choice” is found in either the Bible or in traditional teachings, would help. Methodism is a great faith and they are a church of faith in action, the reason I originally joined.

I just wish they had the strength to stand firm on certain issues. When I told my Methodist pastor I was becoming a Catholic and part of the reason was a belief that there WERE truths and you couldn’t change your mind every few years at General Conference, he admitted HE was also attracted to the Catholic church and were he in a different situation would consider converting!

Ironically they DID take a firm stand on the issue of the lesbian minister. I wonder how long that will last.

Bless you for trying to make a change in the Methodist church. There is hope!
