Hi! My methodist grandparents are coming today for my sisters birthday and they want to go to mass with us tomorrow. I know they aren’t doing it because they are interested, they are doing it because they want us to go to service with them when we are at their house visiting. They say the reason they wouldn’t ever switch religions is because their parents raised them that way and if they changed they would be saying their parents raised them wrong. As they were mad when my mom converted. They also, whenever you bring up some topic about religion if they don’t know the answers just say, “you believe what you believe and I believe what I believe and that’s OK!” Are there any arguments against those two when they say those?

It is good that they want to go to Mass with you.

There is no reason why you may not also attend a Methodist service with them when you visit, but you must also fulfill your obligation to attend Mass. This, in itself, is a powerful witness to the Faith (because I doubt they will insist on also attending a Methodist service when they visit you).

. . . They say the reason they wouldn’t ever switch religions is because their parents raised them that way and if they changed they would be saying their parents raised them wrong. . .
The Apostles would have never made any converts to the Faith with that sort of thinking.

🙂 I know, I think I already know an argument for that. It’s your parents, or God. And, if they are saying that’s why they won’t switch, then maybe they don’t actually think the Methodist Church is the truth. OR maybe they think it is because their parents told them it was xD

I did not “switch religions” when I converted from Methodism to Catholicism. Both the Catholic Church and the Methodist community are the same religion, Christian. The difference is one of completeness.

By becoming Catholic, I was affirming John Wesley’s rebuttal of the Puritans, Calvinists and others who were oppressing the Church of England and trying to force from it every vestige of Catholicism. I do believe that Wesley and the original Methodists would have reconciled to Catholicism had it been possible for them to do so without being slaughtered by the king and his magistrates. Today’s Methodists have since attempted to reconcile with the modern descendants of the Calvinists and Puritans (Presbyterians and Baptists). I don’t think Wesley would have done so.

I would advise reading up on the history of the Methodist movement and coming to understand it as an attempt to defend the historic faith of the Anglican Church–which was Catholicism.

Edit: found a great This Rock article on Methodism

I didn’t know that about Methodism. It gives me a slightly better opinion of it:)
I don’t know a great deal about Methodism, but it is certainly similar to Catholicism in its hierarchical structure.

Methodist ministers take a vow of obedience to their bishop just as do RC diocesan priests.

They also have great picnics.

Heritage is a poor thing on which to stake your eternal soul. Ask them if they believe a practicing Hindu or a Buddhist can go to heaven. Ok maybe not. Why do we have to pretend like everything’s okay? It IS good they want to attend Mass, but are you willing to attend a Methodist service when you visit them?? Because when this is done or encouraged it sends a message like they said - that we’re all ok spiritually even when we disagree theologically. It’s a false charity that gives a misplaced security to the other side: I was raised a bloody heretic. The Catholics who were truly charitable to me told the truth - even if it took me a while to listen. It would interest me if my religion was founded in an effort to preserve Catholicism.

Ok I’m done ranting:)

Oh no I love rants! and that’s exactly what I was thinking, a scandal. They will think we think that it is all OK when it isn’t. Thanks for the awesome post! God Bless.

Iam a ex-protestant, converted to the Catholic Church on october 2010, but i still love the Wesley’s and i also read many times the Bible Commentary of Adam Clarke!

Catholic convert from Methodism here! I still went to MY grandparents church on occassion. My husband, a cradle Catholic, HATED it, but went to make me and them happy. He would have fainted at communion and the difference in that

UM services are rather joyous, but really lack depth. I wills ay if you want to right a socail injustice though, pair up with a Methodist church. They know fund raising and have a great go gettum attitude. They do great works.
