I know I’ve been posting alot on envy on these forums. However, this is a generic question, for all forms, shapes and sizes of envy. This is also for anyone else out there looking to fight this vice.

If we get the temptation to envy and we pray for the person that we are envying, is this a sign that we are resisting envy and thus not sinning?

How does one avoid the sin of envy otherwise? Praying for the person

What is the/a sign that someone has consented and sinned by envy?

Yeah, i would say that would be a sign that some at least didn’t have full consent. I think envy would becomes a sin when we voluntarily keep it in our mind, and there can’t be full consent while we’re fighting the sin.

Praying for the person would be great. It would also be good to practice humility and kindness, because envy often comes from pride.

I think that if someone committed a mortal sin of envy, they probably wouldn’t need a sign because they would know for sure what they did. Though that’s where scrupulosity makes it really hard because the scrupulous person is always looking for a reasons why it could/might be a mortal sin. If someone finds themselves constantly searching for evidence that they hope will tell them for sure if something was mortally committed or not, then that’s a good indication that they’re just being scrupulous.

Hope this helps!

All materialistic envy can be avoided by never forgetting even for a moment why we are here. Do we want to truly know, to have everlasting life, to be forever with our family and friends?
If so we need to value commodities according to our personal needs.

The other envy, Non-materialistic envy is very different. It’s driven by our need for appreciation, that is, increasing our sense of self-value. We can also ward these off by remembering that in the end, the only one we truly need “appreciation” from is God.

Another way to approach the other envy is to remember that when we envy in this way, we are commoditizing the valuations of others, their actions towards others, and ourselves. Thus, we are letting a subjective and irrational force(let’s call it Satan) to dictate our emotions. Best way to blow off said influences is to remember who really is in charge;)

Behold the power of God!

Methods to resist envy:

MYOB - Mind Your Own Business. There will always be SOMEONE who has more or does something better than me. Why should I care about them at the cost of NOT focusing on using my God given talents as best I can? If I focus on those people, do I loose sight of those who have less, much less than me?

My business is to focus on my relationship with God first, then family second, and then all else third.

God calls each of us to KNOW Him, to LOVE Him, to SERVE Him, and then to be happy with Him in Heaven for ever.

To know Him: We are called to be Christ like, not Christ lite. Who did Christ envy? Why should we envy?

To love Him: We are called to love God completely (well as at least the best we can) and then to love ourselves and others for the love of God. Love is wanting and acting for the GOOD of others - the ulitmate good is eternal life in Heaven with God. If, in TRUE LOVE, I want what is good for others, why should I be envious when I think they have it?

To serve Him: We are called to do God’s Will on Earth. Christ taught us to serve Him and others with Love and HUMILITY. So just how and where does envy fit into our job of humble service?

Resist Envy? Refocus, constantly refocus, on developing our proper relationship with God. Constantly THANK GOD for what we have and not complain about we do not have.
