Metropolitan of Rome

The Pope is Metropolitan of the Roman Province. In the Latin Church, all other metropolitans, at least to the best of my knowledge, are styled as Archbishops. The metropolitan of the Vancouver Province is the Archbishop of Vancouver…the metropolitan of the New York Province is the Archbishop of New York…etc. Why does the Church typically use the simple style “Bishop of Rome” rather than “Archbishop of Rome”?

I don’t think Rome has any suffragens. I think archbishops have suffragen bishops to be “arch” over.

Rome does have suffragan diocese. Catholic Hierarchy lists 10 regular diocese (actually 9 and 1 archdiocese), plus the 7 suburbicarian titular sees.

My guess is that it is for historical reasons. The Diocese of Rome was never elevated to an Archdiocese from what I can tell. Since it was never elevated then head of the Diocese of Rome would be a Bishop and not an Archbishop. Why it was never elevated is not clear to me. Purely conjecture on my part though.

Because Rome isn’t an Archdiocese. Rome is a Papal See and one for the original Patriarchal Sees. It’s higher than a Metropolitan See. Though the Pope is the Metropolitan Archbishop for the Province of Rome.

The title of Archbishop is a title not an ordination. The ordination is Bishop.

For example, during Mass, the priests in my Archdiocese say “Francis our Pope and Charles our Bishop.” They don’t say “Charles our Archbishop.” The Pope and the Eastern Patriarchs are above the title of Archbishop (the other 4 Latin Patriarchs are really just honorary Patriarchs and are Archbishops in reality.)

I hope this makes sense.
