Authorities indicated that the motive for the crime was a personal conflict, but Avendaño’s family say that the murder was premeditated, and was an attempt to prevent Avendaño from going public with certain accusations.
The “certain accusations” that this priest allegedly murdered this person over?

We don’t know. The news source omits this information for whatever reason.

Mexico City priest arrested for murder of student, church deacon

29-year-old Leonardo Avendaño had worked with Bautista at a church in Tlalpan

A priest wanted in connection with the murder of 29-year-old deacon Leonardo Avendaño has been arrested by Mexico City police.

Francisco Javier Bautista Ávalos, parish priest at the Cristo Salvador church in the Tlalpan borough of Mexico City where the victim was a deacon, had reported Avendaño’s disappearance to the deacon’s family on June 11.

After Avendaño was found dead in his pickup truck the next day, Bautista led the victim’s funeral service, and expressed hope that the murderer would be caught. . . .

. . . After interviewing Bautista, police noticed inconsistencies in his testimony, Mexico News Daily reports. Reviewing his cell phone records, authorities discovered the priest had met with the victim the night Avendaño went missing.

Notimex reports Bautista had officiated the religious services at Avendaño’s funeral. “We are sad, but at the same time, we have faith, and it gives us strength to know that he is with God,” he reportedly said at the service. . . .

It is complicated in Mexico when crimes like this occur. It is not unusual for attempts to make priests look like they are guilty of crimes or at fault when they are victims of them.

Many murders of priests have been made out to be “simple robberies” or “fights among friends when alcohol is involved” or even “revenge for being a pedophile” and later we learn it’s untrue. One murdered priest in Michoacán was accused of frequenting a hotel with a teen boy when later it was shown he was not the person they had “on video”.

This case seems really weird to me. I hope that it is another case of a priest being falsely accused. I am afraid I may be wrong though. I’ll post more if I come across more information.

I tend to agree. There have been many instances of priests being falsely accused. Mexico is a very hard and dangerous place to be a priest.
