Mexico May Take Fence Dispute to U.N

Luis Ernesto Derbez told reporters in Paris, his first stop on a European tour, that a legal investigation was under way to determine whether Mexico has a case.
The Mexican government last week sent a diplomatic note to Washington criticizing the plan for 700 miles of new fencing along the border. President-elect Felipe Calderon also denounced the plan, but said it was a bilateral issue that should not be put before the international community.
Derbez said Monday after meeting with French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy that it was a “shame” U.S. immigration policy had been used for what he claimed was a short-term political gain in the lead-up to midterm elections in the U.S. in November.
He said he discussed the issue with Douste-Blazy, and planned to bring it up in meetings with his Spanish and Italian counterparts during visits to Madrid and Rome. He vowed to work on the case until the “very last day” of President Vicente Fox’s term, which ends Dec. 1.
The U.S. Senate approved the border fence bill last month and President Bush has said he will sign it into law _ despite last-minute pleas from the Mexican government for a veto.
“What should be constructed is a bridge in relations between the two countries,” Derbez said.

As long as the fence is built on the US side of the border, I don’t see where it’s any of the UN’s or Mexico’s or anyone else’s business. Don’t start the morality argument here. This statement is only about the lack of authority of any other national or international political entity to determine what goes on within our borders. Did the UN do anything about the Berlin wall?

There’s an old saying that I believe answers this way of thinking:

“Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.”

If we don’t have a say in the UN we give up our right to veto or change anything decided within it.

As to the fence, Mexico doesn’t want it built because it will mean they will have to deal with their astronomical number of unemployed, which they’d rather dump on the USA than do anything about themselves.

And yet, many Iraqis feel they got more from their government through that program than they had gotten before. Kurds in the north had never gotten so much as a Thank you from Saddam’s henchmen, but during the Oil for Food program they got baskets of essentials. The program was corrupt, no doubt about it, but it did do some good. I’d like to the Iraq gov’t bring it back, but instead of giving out food, give out checks like Alaska does to its citizens. Mexico’s biggest problem is it cannot grow its economy enough to keep up with population growth. They either need to grow the economy faster or cut population growth.

With respect to the “Oil for Food” program, I STRONGLY recommend reading George Sada’s book, “Saddam’s Secrets”. The level of corruption within Iraq courtesy of the Baathists was breathtaking. I have encountered only a very few examples of similar levels of deliberate sabotage of an economy for personal gain.

With respect to a “fence” at the U.S. - Mexican border, most probably it would be a double wall, topped by wire and separated by a space that can be patrolled. Going over the wall would be extremely difficult because of the need to deploy one set of ladders and THEN transport another set to the second wall.

The tunnels that have been dug are few in number and can be detected with modern electronic seismic detectors.

Similar wall/fence combinations have been successfully installed at a variety of places and dramatically reduced the incidence of uncontrolled border crossing. San Diego, Israel, Berlin… the walls were successful. The crossings were reduced by a huge margin. Maybe 90%.

With respect to your own yard, you are bound by municipal zoning rules and statutes. The comparison with an international boundary is not a direct comparison. Every country has an obligation to enforce its soverignty.

For example, Mexico enforces ITS borders and takes a dim view of violators.

May I offer you some advice? Spend more time on you English spelling, grammar and punctuation, spend a lot of time reading history and less time on the internet, serve your country in the military or something like the Peace Corps if you wish. Then you opinion will carry a little more weight with many of us. Until then go wipe your nose.
