I see some lists name Michael Cerularius, (d. 1054) as the founder of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Isn’t that giving him too much credit for a very old, complex, exasperated political tension between the east and west?

If anyone is to be considered the “founder” of Eastern Orthodoxy, I would say its Cardinal Humbert : p .

Really though, there is no “founder” of Orthodoxy (or Roman Catholicism if one looks at it from the other side). You hit the nail on the head, it was a very complex situation.

I may get rained upon, but my gut reaction is no-of course not. As I see it, Christ established the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Due to complex political and theological reasons, and the sin of pride, the two “Halfs” (for lack of a better term) Catholic and Orthodox are in a state of schism. Just my take.

God Bless,
Pakesh

What is the source of such lists? I seriously doubt they could come from the EOC. LIke the CC, the EOC asserts that its founder was Christ. We both share the same source and founder (we were one Church, after all).

From what I understand, Michael Cerularius was the Patriarch of the Eastern Church around the time of the Great Schism.
