I’m starting to take an issue with the idea of God’s unconditional Love and Mercy.

What happened to the God who meted out punishment, or the God who required the sons of the fathers to reap bad karma? What happened to the God who required His own Son to die in recompense for sins committed and to be committed?

From out of the seeming blue, we’ve now got this God who loves us and is proud of us when we’re sinful – even when we reject Him outright. The distinction between Jew and Gentile has been erased, God suddenly sees no division between Christian, Muslim or anti-theist, being we’re all children of God, even though that didn’t prevent the Philistines and Gergashites and Jebusites from being slaughtered in favor of the true church, Israel.

And now God’s Mercy has been extended to the farthest horizons. “You’re a good, faithful Catholic, so God’s Mercy will save you – but Timothy McVeigh…we don’t know about Him, but pray God’s Mercy saved him also.”

And the death of Senator Kennedy has raised more questions about God’s Mercy. “We hope he confessed his unwillingness to fight for the rights of the unborn…but here’s some funeral rites anyway…”

The Vatican might as well issue a statement declaring its modus operandi being one of peace and love, try to live morally (whatever that means), and as for all the rest, we don’t really know. This is the true spirit of postmodernism, the spirit which Vatican II tried capturing. I don’t know what happened to God, but He seems to have been personified as Teletubby or a *really *mellow flowerchild.

I don’t even know why people fear Hell. I’m not sure Hell exists in the mindset of the Church anymore. God’s Love and Mercy have been extended so wide as to include nearly everything and everyone that actual effort seems pointless.

Don’t fall into the heresy of duel gods. There is but one God, the triune Lord, He who creates, redeems, and sanctifies. He is infinitely holy, infinitely just, and infinitely loving and merciful. If you seek punishment for sinners, than pray for Justice to triumph; at least than God will be able to use your prayer for good. But if you pray for sinners to be damned, than beware the fires of Hell yourself, for greater than their sins is your sin of indifference, which causes unfathomable agony to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Source of Love and Mercy, which poured out Its Love and Mercy - Blood and Water - for poor sinners.

Flee to Jesus from every doubt. Immerse yourself in His Heart. It is your consolation.

Hey there!!!

Mercy and love have always been the focus of our beliefs. We just assume in these times the Church has given free rein to sinners. Since Vatican 2 I think. Still this is not the case. Before Jesus came and died for us, God did it all. He was God, Father, and Justice to the folks of Isreal. Now since Jesus was born, We look to Jesus as our Just Judge, as His Father gave Him the Kingdom of this earth to rule. He is the one through whose mercy flows so strongly. He gives His unfathomable mercy to all that ask and then to others who it is asked for. This means that everyone has the opportunity to recieve this mercy and too USE it. If a soul decides not to use it, then Jesus gives it to another to use.

While most people don’t think of mercy and love as being the same thing, it truly is. Look at someone you love. Without realizing what you are doing, yiou give them mercy. This is accomplished through sharing what you have in this world with them. You give them your help, your food, your time, whatever they need because you love them. This is how we are supposed to treat others.

God is the same way. He fills our needs and sometimes our wants. He gives Himself completely to our well-being. We can either recognize the truth about what He does for us or remain ignorant. As far as Hell goes, satan would like us to believe it is not real. He is the master of lies, isn’t he? He would like you to question your beliefs to get your soul. We can not serve two masters. Which one do you want to serve?

I don’t believe that the church has changed it views, it has only expanded on the foundations we believe in.

Just some thoughts…

God Bless!!

All we talk about is God’s Love and Mercy, Love and Mercy, Love and Mercy – and then Our Lady warns, “Beware! Souls are falling into Hell by the millions!”

Love and Mercy.

I’m probably going to Hell myself.

Who the heck said “we’ve now got this God who loves us and is proud of us when we’re sinful”? Don’t watch the mainstream news media for your impressions of our Church!

We are all sinners, of course. And what was radical about Jesus is that he came as the divine physician to heal us; this was confusing to Jews who lived under the Old Testament, and to Gentiles who knew about retribution from nature and from civilian authority. The key to Jesus’s mercy taking effect is that we want to be healed. If we reject him, then we are de facto condemning ourselves.

There is room for the Church to emphasize different attributes of God over the years, as directed by the Holy Spirit. The recent devotion to the Divine Mercy is a great thing, and in no way compromises God’s justice. If Sen. Kennedy repented at the last minute, he is entitled to God’s kingdom, just as those who joined late in the harvesting in the fields got a full day’s wage (see Matt. chap. 20). To avoid scandal, perhaps it should have been announced that Kennedy repented from all his views that were contrary to the Church, but that’s a different matter.

Bottom line: justice vs. mercy is one of the great paradoxes of Christianity. Listening to the Church is always safe. Watching CNN is likely to leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Do good to those who hate you… when a man takes away what is yours, do not demand it back… Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate. (Luke 6:27, 6:30, 6:36).

Think of the last time you did that, did it for no other reason than in order to follow Jesus, perhaps in a situation where you could have easily vindicated yourself and shamed your enemy if you had chosen to.

I don‘t know about you, but in my experience, compassion in that sense is not a job for teletubbies or postmodern flower children. Any indifference to right and wrong that a person may have had before he tried that, will be gone by the time he has finished fighting with himself over the decision to act this way.

Maybe that is why our Lord gave us commands like that, so that when confronted with the tension between justice and mercy we will have some first-hand understanding of the issues at stake.

hey brother,

try to remember that God is both Justice and Mercy. If it seems like a contradiction, it is not… the reason the Church talks so much about God’s mercy, is because if we were judged in a TRULY just way, none of us would be saved, because we would all have to pay for our sinfulness. But with God’s mercy, we could be forgiven. When people reject God’s mercy, that is when they have to be judged by His Justice, and that’s where you get the “God of the Old Testament”. 😉 but see He’s the same God, in the end… He doesn’t change, but our relationship with Him can change.

what the Divine Mercy message says, is that God’s mercy is GREATER. 🙂 which is really good hope for us… and the reason it is greater, is because of the Cross. So in the Cross, His justice and His mercy meet.

Now is the time for Mercy…and now is the time we are given to accept God and to repent. In the Last Judgement, it would be Justice. And if we hadn’t turned to God’s mercy during life…it would be very difficult for us then.

try to not see it as a contradiction so much… God is so much bigger than we can imagine.
God bless

Sorry, the post I submitted here just now was actually meant for a different thread by Epistemes :o. I’ve deleted it . . . I’m out . . .

God bless you though, Epistemes. Don’t let fear get you down. As the Scripture says, “Perfect love drives out fear.” Seek the perfect love, seek ways to express it at every opportunity, and God will bless you with hope and deeper knowledge of the ways of the Lord. May the Lord be with you!

Hello there!

If we perform the acts of Mercy that are prescribed by our faith as taught by Jesus Himself, we are recieving tremdous amouts of mercy already. We show our earthly love for our fellow human beings through these acts of mercy. This does filter up to God and He in turn gies us mercy and more. This is a reciprocal relationship between us and God. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, we have been give a renewed chance to ascend to heaven through acts of mercy. Mercy translates into loe. Loe is what we strive for in our relationship with God and with our fellow human beings.

God gave us Jesus to redeem this race of sinners. It does not mean all will be saved. The opportunity is there for those who wish to take it. It takes love of God and a willingness to sacrifice for others at your own expense.

God knows each of our own limitations and asks that we give 110% of ourselves to Him. This has always been the case, even in the Old Testesment. God demanded it much more harshly then. Now through Jesus, we have who is a fount of mercy given by God to redeem us. We see God through Jesus’ wounds and that is mercy itself.

I think that we have been given much more than the Isrealites of old. Their only recourse was straight to God. We have the intercessions of Jesus, His Blessed Mother and a host of saints. That to me is love and mercy!

Just some thoughts…

God Bless!
