My teen son is in middle school and is deeply interested in both his Catholic faith, and in science. I am looking for a good book recommendation for a book which discusses the interplay between faith and science.

He can handle high school content in both those areas, although still reads at the middle school level. I know of two good scholars in this area, Jaki and Polkinghorne. But Mom and I are not as well versed and are over our heads with his questions.

God Bless, and thanks in advance for any assistance.

As someone with a PhD in cell biology and molecular genetics and a Catholic this is a topic I too am very interested in. I recently read and enjoyed Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial?: . . . and Other Questions from the Astronomers’ In-box at the Vatican Observatory by Brother Guy Consolmagno and Father Paul Mueller.

This might be a good book and I think wouldn’t be too difficult a read. It talks about questions such as how can you reconcile the Big Bang theory with belief in God as the Creater of the universe and is the Catholic Church really against science (spolier alert, it’s not :D)?

Brother Guy Consolmagno also has a few other books that may be worth checking out like God’s Mechanics: How Scientists and Engineers Make Sense of Religion although I haven’t read that one.

I have also read Francis S. Collins (director of the National Institute of Health and involved in the human genome project) book The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief. He also has other more recent books as well. While I enjoyed this book, I would caution that Collins comes at the topic as a former atheist who now considers himself an evangelical Christian and some of his views on bioethics particularly in regards to embryonic stem cell research (which he supports) is opposed to Catholic teachings so this may not be the best book for middle schooler trying to make sense of how science and the Catholic faith fit together.

Hope that helps some and if you care to share any specific questions he is asking I may be able to dig up some additional resources.
