I went to Midnight Mass tonight, and I noticed that the reading of the Gospel was from the Vigil Mass (Jesus’ genealogy), and not the one put in the Book of the Gospels for Midnight Mass. Is there an option of which reading to use? I thought there wasn’t, but I could be wrong.

The USCCB site does not indicates option

Priests/deacons are human beings, errare humanum est.

I believe in the lectionary it states that you can substitute readings from any Christmas Mass. We read the Midnight readings at our three vigil masses.

Yep, I remember once at our abbey, at Vigils, Father X read the reading from Year I when we were in year II of the 2-year lectionary. I asked Father Y (my spiritual director) why Father X did that and he replied “Because Father X made a mistake”.

The Genealogy of Jesus is chanted at our abbey in French at Vigils and it is hauntingly beautiful. There is a recording from the monks of Solesmes doing it in Latin and it is equally beautiful.

It may have depended on the actual time of the Mas you went to. If the Mass was actually at 12pm midnight, the priest may have substituted as mentioned by another poster. If it was in the evening of 24 December, starting before midnight (e.g. 8pm or 9pm), your pastor may have been using the Vigil Mass for use on 24 December, rather than the order of service of the Midnight Mass as given in the Sacramentary and Lectionary.

The OCP missalette my parish uses has language suggesting that priests can substitute readings at Christmas Masses for pastoral reasons. I’ll take a look at Mass tomorrow and get the exact language.

Yes, that is what the Lectionary says. Our priest used the Dawn mas readings for the 9 am that I attended Note that he did 2 or 3 masses yesterday and another 2 or 3 today. I presume that he took the one set of readings for the basis of his homily, which was on the Dawn Gospel. It is not reasonable to expect him to do multiple homilies, and the homily should fit the readings.

Are you refering to a Christmas Mass when you said the priest read the reading from from year I when we were in year II? The two year cycle of weekday reading is only the first reading and psalm for weekdays during ordinary time.

I was kind of bummed because they read “Mass at Dawn” at the 4 pm we went to in Colleyville, TX. I had been looking forward to Matthew’s all week.

Although it did prove my theory that 4 pm Mass is a zoo anywhere. Next time we’re in Dallas we wait and go to the 8 in Grapevine.
