God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. - John 3:16-17
This doesn’t seem right at all. Might have eternal life?? Doesn’t that means then that Jesus died for almost nothing? I mean, he died for our sins of course, but does that mean there is something wrong there? That we only *might *be saved because he did that?
Almost sounds as if we can’t have confident faith in that.
I look at other translations and the others don’t say “might.” This was the very first verse I ever knew when I was a kid, and I always knew it like “God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him shall NOT perish but have everlasting life”
The greek doesn’t even say might…
