I love his pitch for money for his Micah Project.
I know I’m being a bit judgmental, but read that pitch over again. He sounds like a TBN televangelist, just with a Catholic flavor. I’m kind of wary of him.
Why do all these new Protestant converts to Catholicism automatically feel that they have an Apologetics Ministry ???

My cable company doesn’t carry EWTN, unfortunately, and we aren’t allowed to put DISH Network dishes on the buildings of our condo, or I’d watch him on EWTN.

Let me know how he comes across in person.

God bless,

The apologetic spirit is wanting to share the JOY of our Faith.

As to Mike - I think this comes naturally to him as he has always been in Ministry since he has 15.

I think you can get a “feed” off the www.ewtn.com site of this and any other one of their shows

Hi Bill.
I am not against people sharing the faith, not at all.
I share it too.
It’s just it seems (and I’m a convert too) that whenever a protestant converts these days, these new converts immediately launch apologetics ministries.
Personally, I think we converts should take several years acclimating ourselves to Catholic faith and practice before we go getting hired to write books for Ignatius Press and give world speaking tours.

God bless,

I have met Michael Cumbie and have heard him speak “live” on a couple of occasions. As a matter of fact, he is coming again to speak to our Bible study group in mid-January. He is a dynamic, fun speaker and everything I heard him say is 100% in line with Catholic teaching. I suppose the reason that many of these protestant converts feel that they have an “apologetics ministry” is because they so desparately want to reach the people they left behind in faith as well as educate Catholics in general. Personally, I’m all for spreading the Faith too so I don’t object to any of these converts setting up a ministry so long as they are strictly in line with Catholic teaching and not letting old views creep in. Mr. Cumbie “preaches” the Catholic faith as if he were still in a Baptist Church. I think that is just his style, but I also think he also does it to attract attention. Especially the attention of Baptists. He wants every single one of them to “come home”.

As far as pitches for money, well, that is one of those things that you have to decide if it is worth it. While it is true that the money won’t be going to shelter and feed the poor and needy, the money will be used to spread the message to all. I think it is rather expensive for any apologists to fly all over the country to speak to parishes, or run radio ministries, tv ministries, etc. There is so much need for the message to get out there in the media to combat the secular media. I don’t mind giving him money… I think he and other converts can effectively evangelize.

You are right that any convert needs to make sure that their books and speeches are completely “Catholic”. We don’t want the faith misrepresented. However, Mr. Cumbie had a thoroughly Catholic message to my Bible study group so I am not concerned that he will lead anyone astray.

Thanks for the info, Prayer_Warrior !!

Merry Christmas !!

Why do converts like Mike Cumbie feel they have to set up
a ministry to evangelize? I have not heard of Mike Cumbie
before but I love to watch the Journey Home. Since most of
the guests there were ministers or priests in their time before
coming home:
One: They have a great love for the Lord.
Two: Their journeys have involved an enormous amount of
education about the Church and coupled with their knowledge
of the bible, they certainly seem very qualified for these
evangelizing ministries.
Three: Since their conversions usually leaves them without
a job, doing a ministry seems a natural way to make a living.
It’s probably not easy though.
Four: Most Catholics in the pews (like me) love to hear our
Church spoken about in such glowing terms (the Truth) and with such enthusiasm.
Five: Their conversions can witness to non-catholics since
they’ve “been there”.
Teresa
P.S. One of these days I’ll figure out how to justify the margins, add little faces, etc. Please bear with me until then.

On a side note,

I was baptized Catholic and then really never went back to Church as a Child. My parents were church hoppers and the Catholic faith was never really encouraged.

I was an atheist in College, “hey we all do some dumb stuff in College,” but then I began to believe hey this Jesus guy has something to him.

So to come back to the Catholic Church I really had to learn a lot. I tried other denominations and met some good people, but it was only through intense study and lots of prayer that I realized that Catholicism is the Church Christ started and is the only Church whose teaching can be traced back to the Apostles (I Know some Orthodox people will have issue with that, Im not looking for a fight)

That being said, it is for this reason that I think converts are good at teaching Catholicism. They have to learn and accept a lot to become Catholic. Many cradle Catholic’s haven’t the slightest idea about where their faith comes from because they have never seriously questioned it. I think people who have had to journey and have ask the questions are well suited to teach. Also converts from another religious are excellent for converting and teaching people from their previous denomination because they understand it. I mean there are thousands of protestant denominations. I haven’t the slightest idea what each believes, I only know broad generalizations. So let one who does teach them the Catholic faith. They will best be able to understand their arguments and know how to interpret their misgivings.

Just an opinion, I could be wrong

I saw Mike Cumbie last time he was on Journey Home and found him incredibly refreshing. I’m in the South and am surrounded by mega-churches with really dynamic teachers (not that our priest isn’t 🙂 ), but it seems that a lot of people in our area go to where the preacher is most dynamic not necessarily where they can meet the Living God each Sunday. (I’m speaking of the more non-denoms, not a particular tradition. Before reverting, I attended a large non-denom here in town for several years.)

Because folks here are use to over the top preaching, Mike Cumbie is just what is needed. He’s on fire, he’s what we are use to in our former pulpits and he comes from a Catholic perspective. He’s a triple threat. 😛

I saw Muke Cumbie on EWTN not to long ago he was so refreshing and funny!!! He is on fire for our Lord. 😃
I am revert myself and I never appreciated the church until I started learning about other faiths, I didnt want the catholic church to be THE ONE. Lo and Behold she was but along with my journey back home I have to say that protestant converts really made me appreciate my faith in a much deeper sense because here you have a sometimes anti-catholic and they were lead into the church because of studying or they just felt that God is truly present here. AND THEY TALKED ABOUT IT!!! 👍
My reversion (if that is how you can call it) was lead by Scott Hahn, Marcus Grodi, Father Corapi, and many many more.

Anyone see Mike Cumbie last night at 1000 EST on EWTN? Comments on his presentation? I found it very refeshing - an unabashed Catholic.

I saw it and found it entertaining and informative. It is like watching one the Protestant preachers on the other network but the guy is speaking Catholic. I can see now how important the dynamics of the speaker need to be for Protestant people. I think he is right on the money when he says the Protestant, Evangelicals and Catholics must reunite. We seem to be fighting civil wars rather than those against the true enemy.

If the ranks of Evangelicals and Protestant converting to Catholicism begun to grow by leaps and bounds … look out, it will be a sight to see.

I think the Micah Project is wonderful. However, does he ever go into protestent circles to preach or explain?

I couldn’t agree more…I had seen Mr Cumbie a few weeks ago on The Journey Home, and was immediately taken with his story and his obviously gifted manner of speaking (or preaching!) I watched the first episode of “The Micah Project” last night and found it a tremendously uplifting experience. He is engaging, humorous, and 100 percent orthodox Roman Catholic. I can understand some people being a little wary of the requests for funding and the launching of the traveling ministry, but I have seen nothing in the 2 hours I’ve spent watching him on EWTN to make me reluctant to support him. When the inevitable DVD’s and tapes hit the EWTN Religious Catalogue (if they are not already there- I haven’t checked), I will be buying a few as gifts to some of my Protestant friends–and slightly fallen away Catholic relatives!!

I also saw Mike Cumbie’s presentation on EWTN last night (as well as the Journey Home show previously) and found him very refreshing and enoyable.👍 He should appeal to young people and those who have been away from the church or potential converts to the faith, especially from Evangelical backgrounds.

Good point that folks like Mike Cumbie have been involved in " Ministry" for so long they really don’t know how to make a living any other way! Well, maybe that is their gift and the Good Lord is using them to do some good for the faith. We need good apologetics in the deep South where Mike is from anyway. Remember he said on EWTN that he actually met Fundamentalists who thought that Catholics didn’t look like normal people! that they had horns and things! Thats amazing in this day and age that people would be so backward. Living in the Northeast we sometimes forget how un- sophisticated parts od the USA still can be. Mike’s style is fun and as long as he teaches the True Catholicism, he will be a welcome addition to the Journey Home crowd. Now 6000 strong, I hear.

Actually, that may not be true. I have heard of people using the Interstate Commerce Clause of the US Constitution to challenge those rules (including condos) and they have been successful.

The only thing is that your condo must have a way to point the dish with an unobstructed view of the SW. All satellites are Equitorial and the ones for the use are mostly over the west coast and pacific (I was in Satellite communications for 7 years 😊 )
