Mike Murdock! What is known of him?

My childhood best friend is totally enamored of this Mike Murdock. She had converted to Catholicism in college and now attends this guy’s church; I am so saddened by this. She lost both her parents and her siblings, is divorced, and never had kids. She is alone, desperate and is convinced this man, Murdock, has a crush on her and she him. She was recently told she was hired by him but she does not know for what job, odd. They gave her a myriad of personality tests and like I told her, “now he knows how to get into your brain.” I think he has drained her financially and I have read there have been several women come forward stating they were all lead to believe he would marry them!

What book can I buy her to open her eyes? I have an opportunity here to slowly open her eyes without having her shut the door on me, what advice do you all have?

He comes across pretty well except for one thing: He personally enjoys a very opulent lifestyle (drives a Rolls-Royce, etc.) and continually urges people to give more, more, more. How anyone can trust a preacher like that baffles me. It seems so transparently self-serving, more like a con man than like a man of God.

He really does seem to be all about the money, although I’m not sure that was always true. I’ve heard him preach in person a number of times, and he had some OK messages, which suggests to me that once he might have been more interested in preaching the Word. Now I think he almost is sliding into con man territory.

Oh that’s his name, is it? I used to come across him on TV every so often (our local cable plan for some reason had a channel that was half EWTN and half a Protestant/Pentecostal station, so I was generally looking for EWTN when I found him!–now we just have basic cable which is essentially network television). Never liked the look or sound of him, but don’t know much about him. I’m glad to be able to put a name to the face (I could never stand to listen to him long enough to find out who he was).
