There was this interesting talk by a military chaplain and I can tell he was not Catholic. I started wondering, are there such a thing as a Catholic, non-ordained Chaplain in the military or other organizations?

My understanding is that you have to be an ordained priest/minister in your faith in order to pursue a career in the Military as a Chaplain. As a Chaplain, you minister to all members of the military - regardless of their religious beliefs. There are also other options - you may also become a Chaplain’s Assistant, which means you would travel with the Chaplain on missions - your chief duties would be to provide security for the Chaplain, and of course, you would be responsible for other administrative duties as well.

I hope that helps with your question. 🙂

Interesting. Thank you LFH and thank you Basenji for the link. I’m intrigued by front line priests =).

Like the others said there isn’t an organization or anything, but there are Catholic lay leaders in the military. They are most often necessary when the unit that is deployed does not have a Catholic chaplain with them. Catholic chaplains will travel to celebrate mass in different locations, but that is simply not always a possibility. In my husband’s experience, the unit requests that one become a lay leader and they are generally trained under the parish priest. They are regular active duty military that help those in their unit stay on track and grow spiritually when they are needed.
