It is one of the five pillars of Islam, the fifth to be exact. Every Muslim is expected to take a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime. That is hajj.
The stoning the of the devil is one of the rites of hajj. They believe Abraham was tempted by Satan when going up the mountain with Ishmael to sacrifice him, In our bible he went up with Isaac. But anyway, Satan appeared by a large pile of rocks and tempted him. The angel Gabriel told him to throw stones at Satan. So Abraham picked up 7 small stones and pelted him and he left. Satan tried two more times, each time reappearing at a smaller pile of rocks. Abraham repeated the act and after the third time Satan no longer bothered him.
I have wondered if there was any significance to the three times with the 7 stones and the three pillars or piles of stones.
I know during the pagan times there was idol worship and also a curious story about the three exalted cranes, or daughters of the moon god, al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat.
My relatives intermarried with Muslims, I have been around them from time to time since very young. This is going by what I heard. I think it is correct. Did have to google the daughters correct names and spelling though, lol.

The stoning of the rocks is a symbolic ritual intended to reinforce our ability to resist and turn back temptation.
Abraham was a man of old age when he became a father. After many years of praying to God to grant him a child, and then finally having become a father. God asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son at the time. honestly ask yourselves how you would react If you are a father or a mother and God asks you through visions or a dream to sacrifice your son or daughter. No one can deny this request is monumentally difficult and we would do and listen to anything to rationalize out of fulfilling it.
Abraham was approached by the devil disguised as a person at 3 different times guilt tripping him by pleading with him not to sacrifice his only child and to belie the vision. At each point Abraham turned him away until he finally fulfilled his vision. God rewarded him by sparing his son and turning his experience into a ritual remembered by millions of people for generations to come.
For us, going through the ritual and throwing the stones is about overcoming our own temptations, being conscious of the devil, vigilant of his schemes and to remember that God does not disappoint the believers.
