as someone who attends both rites of the Mass, i can infer that it must have been very unsettling when the switch occured

It depended. Some people welcomed it because the entire atmosphere in Church changed from being a silent reflective place to being a community gathering spot. It also appealed to the mindset of the time period that everything old was bad and everything new was good. Thus was born the wild and needless experimentation that happened in those years.

Yes, they did. Or at least the priests of the day did, most of whom have by now gone on to God’s loving embrace.

Out of obedience everyone did what they were told, like it or not. I don’t see anyone in this article arguing that they will refuse the task, they are just being quoted on their opinions. I am sure we would be eager to learn if they liked it, but this is just a news article.
