I have heard of a lot of people whose minds wander during meditation. The advice I have read about that might apply here. They have advised that you acknowledge the thought and then bring yourself back to what you are trying to focus on. If you concentrate on getting rid of the thoughts they tend to keep fighting for your attention - kind of like a child when you are on the phone. Acknowledging and then turning back to the prayer of the Mass seems to work better.
I agree on the benefits of meditation in regards to what the Asians call “Monkey Mind.”
If one can comfortably recall a short phrase, or even a single word returning you to the “Present,” it can help in fighting a wondering mind.
I am not certain if a mind can be completely under our control, when by it’s very nature is ego centered. The wondering mind discipline is only equal in relation to ego discipline.
This obviously is a Grace we pray for, because attempting it on our own,( at least in my case) has zero results.
The Jesus prayer has been taught for centuries as a way of combating wondering thoughts, even in an abbreviated form.
You are right in allowing a slight amount of “acknowledging” distracting thoughts. It helps defuse their strength.
It’s when we attempt a sustained one on one battle for control that they have “Won.”
Read somewhere to view distracting thoughts as if they were a ripple of water coming to shore, allowing them to vanish as quickly as it arrived.
