Ok, I was recently chatting with a lady and found out that she is a comfirmation teacher, youth group leader and teen acts leader…and-gasp-living with her fiance. AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!

Ok, mini-rant over. Though here is a quick question…once my daughter has confirmation can she stop going to ccd? Cuz she aint getting anything from it. She gets more at home just from hearing me rant about the ccd teachers 😃

Does the priest of your parish know this? If not, he should be informed. If he knows and has done nothing, go to the bishop. This CCD teacher is creating scandal by her actions. (Do you know when her wedding is?)

I’d let the priest know. You might be able to finish her CCD at home, we have several families that homeschool and do their CCD at home as well.
I would have a good talk with your daughter about this. It’s a good example of what not to do, but I would be careful of running the lady down. Your daughter should still respect her as an adult and teacher, even if she is sinning. Just my :twocents:

best solution of all gather your daughter and her friends, find out what they think is lacking in their CCD, what they wish they had more of–apologetics, bible study, comparative religions, moral issues, whatever. Make a proposal and take it to the pastor to research and teach such a course, more in seminar style than classroom style, for post-confirmation teens.

Until you get involved you are just someone else on the sidelines complaining.

I don’t think your daughter is learning the correct things by listening to you “rant about ccd teachers”. Sounds like you are teaching your daughter to gossip about people and find all the faults with others they can. I would watch what you say in front of your daughter.

I agree. In our parish, once kids are confirmed, they can come back and be “peer helpers” in our youth ministry program. There was no additional formation for these peers, just the label. I suggested to our youth minister that we offer something just for the peer helpers. I proposed that once each month we meet for Sunday Mass, then have a book discussion and snacks. We plan to start with Matt Pinto’s book Did Adam and Eve Have Belly Buttons? and see how it goes.

Ditto getting involved and setting up seminars for the post-confirmation crowd. We had a club in our parish in high school that combined youth group with CCD. It was so popular, even the kids from Catholic high schools who had religion class every day attended. We also had Explorers (now Venture Club) which awarded religious medals. We had a really intense study on the Vatican II documents and what they really said.

AMEN!!

Also, stop ranting and talking down the teachers in front of your daughter.

Sadly, many people see the sacrament of Confirmation as graduation from faith formation. Learning about your faith should be a lifelong activity. When someone is 25 or 35 but retains the understanding of a 15-year-old, they often find religion irrelevant to their lives. How much better for your daughter to find ways of continuing to learn and develop in her faith.

Perhaps you could get involved in leading or teaching in the CCD program for teens so that your daughter can see how important religious education is to you. It will also show her how much better it is to take positive steps to fix a problem rather than merely rant about how other people aren’t doing the job.

That was more of a tongue-in-cheek comment. And the rant was more about what a ccd teacher(and it isnt her specific teacher) should teach. I never personally went after this lady. She knows how feel about things and she knows that I would never gossip and spread things around. She is a very mature 16 year old and I do watch what a say. I know what she can and cant grasp in what I talk about with her. And she’ll let me know if I “rant” too much:thumbsup:

Thank you all for responding. Ya’ll have some great ideas!!!

Even if I did decide to stop sending her to ccd next year, her religous education wouldnt stop. I told her she could choose ccd or take what ever adult classes our parish had to offer. I homeschooled for awhile so I also know all bout what I can do at home. Thats where we learned about our Catholic faith when we first converted. Even though my girls are in ccd, and religion classes at school we still put relgious education first in my house!! Im quite determined in that:) They also still like learning about Christ and our Catholic faith. I am quite proud of them:D

So again, thank you all for taking the time to post:)

I would definitely use that last year of high school for some type of faith formation - it’s possibly the last year your daughter will be living in your house full time! And if you find the CCD lacking I would homeschool for sure. I don’t see how you could be refused hsing religious ed - isn’t that the ideal situation - for parents to be doing it at home? I understand they may not let you do Confirmation at home but any other year - should be your choice.
