I know this lady who was hit be a car last November. The car was at a stop sign and the driver did not see the lady and proceded to turn left and hit the lady. The car was not going fast. The driver offered to take the lady to the hospital but in the state of shock, the lady only cared about finding her dog that got scared and ran away. The lady then went home and soaked in the tub and never went to the hospital.

I saw this lady today and asked her how she was. I knew about the accident but that was not what I was asking, it was a general ‘how are you’. She proceeded to tell me she was in massage therapy and chiropractic therapy and had a lot of damged tissue and some other therapy I never heard of but sounded kind of new age. She proceeded to tell me there was a lot of soft tissue damage and I quote ‘I have come to realize this is a process and it will take a while for it to heal since there is tissue damage all over my body. Not just my right leg that was hit but also from all the rolling around I did’. Then when I asked if there was anything I could do to help she said ‘No all my friends are helpong me with my house work just send poistive vibes my way that will help a lot’ and the she had to go.

Well…first off, I pray for people, I do not ‘send positive vibes their way.’ I felt kind of weird after talking to her. There was just something about all the detail she was giving me that seemed freaky to say the least. She was talking like it was such a major undertaking and using a tone of voice like she was slowly going to save the world. What I also found weird is she appeared to be in a worse state then when she told me about the accident the first time

Now I am no medical doctor, but if anyone here is (or knows a lot about these things), is it possible for someone to be hit by a care, get up and walk home and then a couple of months later have soft tissue damage all over and be doing worse?

Also, I don’t like to be uncharitable but I am thinking the next time I bump into her, if she goes on about the accident say in a caring voice 'I am terribly sorry you were hit but this subject makes me uncomfortable, can we please talk about something else? Would that be uncharitable?

Thanks

I think it’s totaly possible.

I injured my back when I was 18, and it wasn’t until I found a spectacular PT who had a clue about bodies at age 32 was I finally relieved of consant returning pain. Usually it was my low back, but could make my leg feel like it was going to fall off, and often near blinding headaches. It wasn’t until he worked it all out that I’ve not had an pain since.

When you injur a part of your body, it’s quite common for other parts to get overworked taking up the slack so to speak. You can end up with pain all over the place. I broke my leg years ago. The cruching and my need to do so, so much, ended up overworking my chest muscles. I woke one night thinking I was having a heart attack the pain was so searing. A hot bath made it all relax.

I DO NOT doubt her pain is quite real, and quite serious. And I can assure you standard medicine is to give her a pain pill. That’s what my Dr.s offered. In fact, I was told because I could touch my toes (what dancer can’t???) that I was better off than most. I couldn’t even sit for more than 20 minutes at a time. Physical therapy, in the realm of manipulation, and even accupuncture can work miracles. I think it’s just spectacular the good Lord found it necessary to educate the people of the earth in MANY forms of healing!

Regarding good vibes… I always ask my Christian friends for prayers, and my non Christian friends for their positive thoughts and “good vibes”. I think God listens to those who are thinking positively for those that need it whether or not that person has a clue they are talking to God. But that’s just me. Some of them would probably beg to differ…🤷

It sounds as though she is being told these things by whomever is “treating” her. People who believe in new age sorts of treatments can fall prey to unscrupulous practitioners who will keep taking their money and convincing them that they need more and more treatment. She had damage from “rolling around?”

I will say that sometimes it takes time for someone in shock to realize that they HAVE been hurt, so in her defense, she could have been hurt worse than she thought at first. That is why she should have called the police so they could get the driver’s information on record, etc. Or is she already getting reimbursed for her treatments through the driver’s insurance? That could be very profitable long-term…not to cast aspersions, but it happens.

I would keep things brief if you run into her again. Try not to bring it up, and if it comes up make an excuse to get away. I would not say, “Could we please talk about something else?” in that direct way, just be pleasant and don’t get into it or somehow change the subject.

Or quickly change the subject to something cheerful and leave fairly soon.

I’m not a medical professional either, but we do tend to pick up a range of barely perceptible clues from body-language and voice from others, and if you have and feel instinctively uncomfortable, then maybe the quick exit and prayers for her is what’s best for you to do. I’ve ignored the instinctive sense of warning with some persons in favor of ‘helping’ of being their needed ‘sounding board’ and it’s ended in an awful mess, despite my best intentions. Usually it’s okay, and the best thing, to be there for others and be their sounding-board, but there are occasions when it isn’t.

As you indicate, others are involved with presumably helping and supporting her and maybe none but you or us is praying for her, something she may need most of all.

Thank you everybody for your replies. One of the main things that had me uneasy was again, how she was describing it. But also, I guess I was in a sense concerned ‘what if she gets worse’. Not because I am a saint who deeply cares for her but because I can help but think (and yes this is self-centered), if ever I was in a car accident, I would hate to think the effects would not show up until months later.

I have heard of people breaking a bone and it has never been the same since and that makes sense to me. After all, we all get older. However to be totally fine for a few weeks and then suffer… that makes ne wonder if our bodies are really that complex

CM

Yes, our bodies are quite complex.

Google things like referred pain. I had a surg. through my abdomen. I was told by my MD to expect pain in my shoulder. Quite common.

I broke my leg within the ankle joint. It will NEVER be the same. I actually understood after I got out my cast why so many women can’t wear heels. I NEVER had a problem. When a PT explained that I had “normal” range of motion, I thought seriously? Normal feels nearly crippled. Who can even function like this???

Sometimes my ankle just dissappears. I go to take a step and I can’t feel any strength, and I lose total balance.

Just pray that should you ever be injured you are blessed to find a quality doctor, not the guy who graduated at the bottom of his class!

Yes, injuries can definitely show up later.

I was in a car accident which totaled my vehicle. Initially, I was able to get out of my vehicle and walk around, but a few days later, I could barely move. I could not turn my head at all, and I could not even walk up stairs cuz my back and legs hurt so bad. The medical doctors wanted me to take oxycodone and just “rest”. The chiropractor and massage therapists helped me work out the pain. I sometimes feel pain in my leg which is really coming from my back. Or pain in my head coming from my shoulder. It is really odd when the massage therapist presses on a spot on my back and I get shooting pains elsewhere – ear, cheek, knee – the nervous system is a wondrous system.

I was in a head on collision in December and was peeled from my truck which was totaled, and taken to the hospital in an ambulance. There, I was xrayed and with no broken bones sent home with pain meds, muscle relaxers, prednisone. Everyone in the emergency room at the hospital was sure an angel was with me in that truck because they felt I should have been in much worse shape. I didn’t have a scratch on me or one noticable bruise.

Fast forward to today Feb 19th and I could barely kneel at Mass this morning, I have neck pain and radiating headaches everyday that start from the back of my neck up and over my head to my eyes.

The middle of my back hurts to the point I have to just lay there before getting up in the morning and the small of my back hurts all on the right hand side.

I was thrown all over and into the stick shift which forced all air out of me and bruised me internally and all of this started to hurt me about 1 1/2 months after the accident. Yes, I had a seat belt on and shoulder harness that actually cut into my chest and I was doing the speed limit.

Whoever made the comment that being reimbursed for medical expenses because of a car accident can be profitable in the long term—well, here’s some information for you.

I have had to pay for every single doctor’s visit, exam, X Ray, treatments blah, and blah, out of my own pocket–no one has reimbursed me yet. So far it is a grand total of $6,800 and I don’t have any insurance to cover this as I have been out of work for 2.5 yrs now at 60 yrs old. So, yea you can see just how profitable it’s been for me and I still am out my farm vehicle.

I am still not through with the doctors and quite honestly I really don’t give a big fat rats if some new age witch doctor wants to wave a bunch of chicken bones over me just as long as he removes the pain. This has been no day at the beach.

I have ridden, trained, and shown horses all of my life and now I can’t even walk across the pasture to give one of them a pat on the neck.

So when that woman tells you she has been injured and didn’t feel it until some time later----you might want to believe her.

Seven years ago I was a passenger in a car that was rear ended by a speeding pickup truck. I got out of the car, helped push it off to the side of the road, walked around and inspected damage, and filled out an accident report with the highway patrol. By the time I got home I was a little sore, but an acetaminophen took care of it.

Two days I woke up almost immobilized with pain and with the worst headache I’ve ever had. It’s the only time in my life I’ve ever had to call an ambulance to get me to the hospital; I couldn’t even walk to my own front door.

It was probably eight to 10 months before I was completely well and “back to normal”. Some days were better than others, but during the worse days I shuffled around, hunched over like a woman 40 years older than I was, and this was months and months after the accident.

My advice, the next time this woman tries to engage you in her accident troubles, adroitly change the topic. “Wow, Claire, I’m so sorry you’re still limping. I’ll say a prayer for you. So what did you think of Father’s homily this morning?”

One of my daughters is a marathon runner. Several years ago, she and her sister were
hit on the right side, car was totaled, but she appeared to be okay. Weeks later she
started having headaches, but she had forgotten the accident by then and just took
aspirins etc. She was a full time student and working two jobs at the time so she didn’t
even go to the doctor. Three years later, I was rearended and went to the orthopedic doc
who only gave me pain meds. I started going to a chiropracter and my headaches stopped
almost immediately, the back and leg pains took longer, but eventually they were gone.
Dd mentioned that she still had headaches and her knees were bothering her so much
she was not running very much. She did make an appt with chiro, did an intake sheet and
before she could turn it in, the chiropracter walked out, said hello and right there asked her
to turn around so he could check her spine. After a few seconds, he asked her if she had
ever been side-swipped. She said yes, about 3 years earlier. He pressed a section of her
back and asked if it hurt, it did. She had dislocated her spine and the areas that were
affected had nerve ending going to her neck (headaches) and her knees. She is still going
as often as she can (because of time lapse getting help it will take a many treatments)
and is finally getting relief from the headaches and knee pain. She had to stop the
treatments when she was pregnant, and she suffered tremendous pain in her back
because of the weight of the twins.
Anytime one is in an accident, these “soft tissue” injuries can turn out to be very painful,
and are not easy to spot. A good chiro after the ortho doc make a good combo.

I am so sorry to hear about this! Glad you’re back - I knew you hadn’t been posting lately because I keep track of forum members who seem to always know the right thing to say, and you’re one of those. 🙂

I don’t mean to be such a Negative Nellie. There is fraud out there but obviously not all cases are. I sure hope you do get better, especially with the pain relief. And, I hope you get reimbursed and soon. Did the driver who hit you have insurance? And was he/she badly injured as well?

Sounds like maybe she’s had her babies. But I also carried twins, and I went to my PT throughout my entire PG. With my last visit the day before I delivered. I got approval from my OB/Gyn as to what was off limits with regard to manipulation. And I also took to swimming. (I’m not much of a swimmer, but the lack of pressure in the water is amazing!)

I KNOW my PT kept me from being a disaster. The only issues I had with my PG had to do with weight on my pelvis. OUCH! But my back held up amazingly well.

You HAVE to have a PT/therapist you trust and who knows your body. I wouldn’t let just anyone do any sort of manipulation!!! That’s for sure!

TheRealJuliane:

He does have insurance and no he was not injured and as a matter of fact got a new truck from his insurance company. So, he is fine and all taken care of. An interesting fact is that he was my new hay man that I had just spoken to 10 mins before about getting a load of hay. I was on my way to pick it up and he was on his way to get some gas. We only spoke to each other that one time and had never met----well, that is until he hit me head on. 🤷

" I keep track of forum members who seem to always know the right thing to say, and you’re one of those."

Well, I’m glad that you feel so because there are a few on CAF that feel I can be very “uncharitable” to the sluggy women that come on here wanting to know how they can be more understanding and loving of their sluggy husbands that are abusing them and their children and allowing their children to live in squaller while their husbands wine and dine their girlfriends and feed their porn habits with family finances.

Oh but ya know they have to allow all the abuse to their kids because they just can’t leave him—afterall, they love this slug and also divorce is out of the question. But all this is for another thread whenever it finally is brought up by someone other than me.😉

She wanted to continue but she had already had one miscarriage and, while her other
advisors told her it would be okay, her doctor nixed it and she followed her advice.

Yes, it’s very possible for what she’s claiming happened. While it would have been wise for her to go to the hospital right away for insurance purposes, the majority of soft tissue injuries don’t surface until the next day and in the days after the accident.

I know my entire policing career is shot because I was in car accident with a dump truck and another car. I suffered (and still am suffering almost 4 years later) soft tissue injuries. I still haven’t settled my lawsuit.

Your pain sounds like my pain, except I have additional pain in my left shoulder caused by my seatbelt shoulder strap. What makes it worse is that it’s my left sholder and I’m left handed. I can’t get my arm back far enough to blow dry, curl, or straighten my hair, and I can’t lift more than 5 lbs above my shoulder. The EMT’s told me they can tell in even minor car accidents that they can tell if someone was wearing their seatbelt by the mark that it leaves on the shoulder.

I also know what you mean about paying for appointments out of pocket. After I maxed out my insurance coverage, I was on my own and have to collect for it in the lawsuit. Well, I’m a student living on less than $700/month. I can’t afford anything out of my pocket, so I had to put my physio, chiro, and massage therapy on hiatus. Naturally, my injuries are getting worse. It also doesn’t help that I now have a fear of fast moving large trucks next to me when I drive and have flashbacks to the accident.

I’m not profiting poop off my claim.

BTW: What was this “new age therapy”?? The majority of therapy used to treat soft tissue injuries are older than medical practitioners whose answer to pain is to prescribe pain killers and keep taking them until you get addicted and have liver and stomach damage from them.
