Minor success story: Finally got a local Church to refill Holy Water fonts during Lent

After a few years of emailing this local church about their misguided practice of keeping the Holy Water fonts dry during Lent, this Church finally had them refilled a few weeks ago.

Of course I’d like to think it was my emails that nudged this Church in that direction, but more likely it was due to many who complained about this practice.

Moral of the strory–sometimes a parishioner’s concerns are listened to and dealt properly with.
 
FANTASTIC! We need all the grace we can get especially during lent!
 
Wait! My parsih has sand instead of the water during lent, are you telling me this is wrong? Can I ask why? If it is wrong I would like to play my part in correcting it.
 
If you put sand in the fonts where I am someone would be likely to grind out a cigarette in it - understandably thinking that’s what it’s for.

As Father Z says - Brick by brick we rebuild the liturgy. 👍

I know of some seminarians who added parasols, from cocktail dodads, and tiny beach towels to each sand filled font.

However, my favorite was someone who inserted some fast germinating seeds into the sand and added a little water each day. He soon had a nice lawn. 😃
 
Was this your own parish? A church you attend regularly?

I do think it is wonderful that the church is not with-holding holy water, but I’m not sure peppering a parish you have no connection to with emails is the best way to get things done.

I’d like to think it was the many praying for the pastor and priests at this church who moved their hearts.
 
I sent our local Pastor a copy of the letter that is described via EWTN from Monsgr Marini.
So this Lent we had Holy Water in the fonts. 🙂 😃 😃
 
Our Holy Water fonts were dry for years during Lent. When our new pastor arrived a few years ago I saw my opening. I filled 12 one gallon milk jugs with holy water before Lent. I just took the time to re-fill the fonts on my own. Some of the laity got upset but the pastor never asked. They don’t drain them anymore…
 
The church I attend leaves the fonts dry Friday 1500hrs through to the Easter Vigil, I hate this as I find the sacramental of holy water very consoling. But the whole point is to hammer home the desolation of Christ’s death prior the glory of the Ressurection.

The fonts are supposed to be emptied after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. They are to remain empty until after the last Mass on Easter Sunday.
 
I am glad to see this abuse disappearing all over. Lent is not a time for doing without the sacraments or the sacramentals, no time really is. Now if we could only stop washing women’s feet on Holy Thursday!
