I have a question about whether or not I am allowed to be wearing my miraculous medal even though I’m not consecrated to Mary. As well as what is the history behind it I guess I’ve always just seen it as a thing saying I value Mary and love her and acknowledge her special connection with the son(I wear a crucifix next to it) as well as me acknowledging her sinlessness.

Yes, you can wear it, as long as you wear it reverently. There is a famous story about a Jewish man who didn’t like Catholicism. He wore a Miraculous Medal on a dare from a friend. He ended up seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary and converted to Catholicism and became a priest.

You do not have to be consecrated to Mary in order to wear the medal. It is recommended that a priest bless the medal/ invest you in the medal, but it’s not required that this be done in order to wear it. I would recommend that you do get it blessed at your earliest convenience if you haven’t already, because blessing is a special sacramental in addition to the medal already being a sacramental.

The history of the Medal is that Mary herself presented the design in a vision to St. Catherine Laboure, a French religious sister of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, and asked her to have a medal made. A detailed story of the history of the medal is here:

It is fine for you to wear the medal as a sign of your love for Our Blessed Mother and acknowledgment of her sinlessness. You should also pray for Mary , Our Lady of Grace (as pictured on the medal) to grant you the graces you need to grow closer to God.

What does it mean to be invested in a medal and does the fact that I am not a confirmed Catholic change anything.(I start RCIA at Easter)

For certain sacramentals, like the Brown Scapular and the Miraculous Medal, a priest will perform a little ceremony blessing the scapulars and medals, and praying for the people who are going to wear the scapulars and medals.

It’s typically done at shrines by priests of the specific orders that are most concerned with scapulars and medals. Ordinary priests at a parish are often not well-versed in these sacramentals, which were associated with particular orders. The Miraculous Medal was promoted by the Vincentians (the order of St. Vincent de Paul) as St. Catherine Laboure was a member of that religious order. So you are most likely to see the Miraculous Medal investiture ceremony at shrines that have Vincentian order priests, which is where I have seen it done myself.

Here is a description of the ceremony from EWTN:

It doesn’t matter if you aren’t Catholic. You don’t have to be Catholic to wear the Miraculous Medal as long as you wear it reverently, which it sounds like you are doing just fine.

Absolutely! I wear the Miraculous Medal and Crucifix 24/7 over my clothes, and when I’m sleeping I put it under my shirt. But I don’t shower with it. It’s a great thing to wear and you get lots of graces and protection from it!

Jason Evert falls the Miraculous Medal a “spiritual bullet”.

You don’t have to be Catholic to wear it let alone consecrated to Mary. Yes you can wear it, anyone can!

Or maybe with traditional priests.
I don’t know if the FSSP or others societies/orders/fraternities do it, but I received my investiture from an SSPX priest.

And yes OP, it’s ok to use it even if you’re not consecrated to the Blessed Virgin.
