Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Nov. 28 is the Feast of St. Catherine Laboure. See HERE for a beautiful account of Mary’s apparitions to St. Catherine Laboure, and Mary’s giving the image of the Miraculous Medal to this humble little saint.
On Dec. 31, 1876, St Catherine Labouré left this earth for heaven, to contemplate there her Immaculate Queen whose love and beauty had captured her heart on earth.
Her body was exhumed 57 years later and found in perfect condition. Even death respected her who had enjoyed the extraordinary privilege of resting her hands on the knees of the Blessed Virgin for more than two hours during one of the apparitions. Saint Catherine was canonized by Pope Pius XII on July 27, 1947.
The simplicity of Saint Catherine’s life endears her to everyone. She became a saint by doing her commonplace duties well, for God. This “Saint of Ordinary People” has the secret of sanctity for us all.
How did St. Catherine pray? Her words: "When I go to the Chapel I place myself before the good God and I say to Him:
‘Lord, here I am, give me what You will.’ If He gives me something, I am very pleased and I thank Him. If He gives me nothing, I still thank Him because I do not deserve anything. And then again, I tell Him all that passes through my mind; I recount my pains and my joys and … I listen. If you listen to Him, He will speak to you also, because with the good God it is necessary to speak and to listen. He will always speak to you if you go to Him simply and sincerely.’ For more on St. Catherine and the Miraculous Medal Association, see HERE
In spirit may we too place our hands on Mary’s knees as children who love our Mother, and pray with the humility and trust we find in all the Saints, above all in Mary, for our Good God.

St. Catherine Laboure, pray for us.
Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

Thanks for reminding us of this gift from Mary.

When she gave us the medal Mary promised to give those who wore it and prayed, GREAT and ABUNDANT graces.
Not just help, but GREAT and ABUNDANT help. But this depends on the trust one has in her. But if Mary who was the mother of Jesus said it, then we can without a doubt believe she will keep her words.

But she did say that only those who ask or pray, will receive the graces. It is a mistake to take this for granted. We must use her medal and ask Mary for the graces she promised to those who honor her wishes. If we don’t ask for GREAT graces, then we cannot expect to receive them.

I hear so often how people on CAF are having in their spiritual life. If only they would do as she asks, their own spiritual mother, they would begin to find out just how wonderful a mother they have.

Because she promised thru the medal, then the requests we ask of her should also be to her thru her medal.
She does not exagerate when she says that they will receive GREAT and ABUNDANT graces.

And of course we must always thank her for those graces before we receive them, for they will be comming.

But we must ask her for GREAT graces and not just graces. Now the graces she is talking about are mainly spiritual graces, not material things. However even now and then she grants these as well.

Do you believe the story about the miraculous medal?

actually, just recently i got my first Miraculous medal, our parish all got enrolled about 3 weeks ago,
well, two days before that, i had a little accident at the skating rink, i fell hard, flat on my backside, and ended up bruising my tailbone, it was very painful afterwards, alot of difficulty walking and especially sitting, even laying down was hard, i could only lay on my right side without pain,
so, i was expecting i’d have to call off from work for a week or two, since the tailbone heals very slowly, and my job is rather physical, which i was praying and praying i wouldn’t have to call off, i prayed that i could be healed at least enough to be able to go to work, so Sunday morning when i went to church, which was very difficult to do, it was just as painful that morning as it was the day before, so much so that i was feeling sick from the pain,
well, we got our Miraculous medals after mass, but just the medal, no chain with it, so when i got home the first thing i did was go upstairs to my room to get a chain, and going up the stairs was very hard, but then i put my medal on…and at first i didn’t think anything of it, but when i went to bend down and pick something up, i remember just thinking to myself “that wasn’t so hard”…and then after i changed and went over my sisters house(right next door) i still didn’t really notice what happened, until we were sitting down for dinner, and i realized that it didn’t hurt at all to sit…i thought perhaps it was a fluke…so i starting dancing around a bit and i was rather dumb founded, i was trying to figure out what happened, i thought perhaps it was from praying for the Souls in Purgatory…or something, but then i remembered when i put on my Miraculous medal, that it wasn’t so hard bending down, even though just a moment before i was struggling to get up the stairs…
which by the way, my prayer was answered just as i requested, i was cured just enough to be able to go to work, it still hurts a little, but does not effect my work at all.

well…i’m not very good at telling stories, but that’s what happened…though it’s not a great miracle by any means, but to me it’s great
i have no trouble believing in the story of the Miraculous medal, it’s always been one of my favorite stories actually, and as the others said, it’s not that we need a medal, obviously God can do what He wants and Our Blessed Mother could still intervene for us without it(and does), but it’s more than that, the medal is meant as a testimony to faith and of trust in prayer, it’s an instrument, a visible promise, and all we’re asked to do is wear the medal as a sign of our faith and our trust in what Our Lady has told us,
and also, just like in my case, if you wear the medal, and receive a special grace afterwards, then you know without question it was Our Lady who helped you, and you can tell others of it, and hopefully inspire them.

but if you’re having trouble believing, you need to pray for faith, faith is an infused virtue, you should pray for it many times each day.
ok, so i hope this helps, take care.

Dear Fred,

Thanks for your reply, for the link to the thread that was started in December of 2012, titled: “Do you believe the story about the miraculous medal” and for including one of the responses. I went back to the original thread posted by “Sunlight” and read many replies of “yes”; some with encouragement such as you included

Yesterday, meditating on the Second Glorious Mystery of the Rosary, I was blessed in remembering Mary’s “visits” to many persons like St. Bernadette, St. Catherine Laboure and especially the three little children at Fatima. Recently I’ve thought about her apparition at Kibeho in Africa. All approved apparitions speak to me of Mary’s union with God Who is Love. Mary shows us God’s Mercy as His Love sent her with haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Mary always brings Jesus to all whom she visits.

I agree with you, we need to ask in order to receive, to seek in order to find, and knock on the doors of the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, if we want God to work great things in and through us. Mary is the Mother of Mercy and the Mother given to us from His Cross. May His words echo deeply in our hearts: “Behold Your Mother”.

Those of us who wear the Miraculous Medal, see Mary’s hands toward the earth ready to dispense all the Graces she receives from God. On the other side of the medal we see the Two Hearts and our faith reveals to us that those Hearts were pierced for love. May we strive to be worthy sons and daughters of so noble a Mother, seeking always the will of God our loving Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

One of my favorite devotions.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

Dear wild thing,

Thanks for your reply and for your devotion to Jesus through Mary and her Miraculous Medal. 🙂

MariaChristi,

You mentioned, “On the other side of the medal we see the Two Hearts and our faith reveals to us that those Hearts were pierced for love.”

That’s a good point Mary brings to us, that they are never separated.

May the God of hope fill you with every joy.

Dear fred,

Yes, the union of those two Pierced Hearts is unique and would that more of us enter into that intimacy. As St. Louis De Montfort wrote in his classic treatise,True Devotion to the Virgin Mary:
…Glory to Jesus in Mary! Glory to Mary in Jesus! Glory to God alone!

One interesting story about St. Catherine as a child is when she lost her mother. When the thought came to her that she had lost her mother, St. Catherine went the statue of Mary that they had in their home. And as she stood in front of it, then she picked it up, embraced it in her arms next to herself, and said to Mary, “now you you will be my mother”.

And you know the rest of the story.

Lord, in your great love, answer me. Psalm 69

Dear Fred,

Yes, I also read about that incident, and thought how sweet a child Catherine was (and is now, in heaven). The thought of her kneeling before our Blessed Mother, years later with her hands resting on Mary’s knee, is such a beautiful image to me. It is so childlike. May we always remember Jesus’ words to his “grown men” disciples, and to all who follow him:
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus, Meek and Humble of Heart, make our hearts like Yours.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.
St. Catherine Laboure, pray for us.

Yayyyy!.. The Miraculous Medal!! 🙂

I think its easy to get in the habit of selfish prayer to our Lady. It can become a litany of ‘give me’s’, it’s best to turn to her and ask how can I honor and serve you today… Then, begin speaking of what the needs I have are.
And of course we must always thank her for those graces before we receive them, for they will be comming.
Right on! Makes sense, don’t it?

‘Great’ ’spiritual’ graces…
Thanks for the reminder. We should think big.

It can be overwhelming but her every word is profound and a blessing.

Mary is our model and we are called to love her like our Lord does. Do you think you can love her more than Jesus? Try it. Ain’t gonna happen… But we should try. Love Mary more. Serve her because her Son is Love.

Dear Googler,

Infants and very little children can’t really “think” beyond their own needs. They naturally ask to be fed or given something to drink or whatever is needed – they simply cry out to their Mother or Father. So too in the spiritual life, when we are at the beginning stages of prayer, we need to cry out for help for ourselves and for others. As we grow and mature, we still realize we are dependent on God as Jesus reminds us in John 15: “Without Me you can do nothing”.

As we grow in prayer, that is, as we grow in our loving relationship with God and our Mother Mary, we begin to think more of them and less of ourselves. We still need to cry out for our own needs and for others, especially when we or they are under trial, yet we far more often seek to offer thanks and praise and offer reparation for our sins because we have “seen by faith” how much God and Mary love us. As one grows, one wants to love them in return and to do more to serve them. Grace builds upon Grace.

Yes, Jesus loves Mary as her Son, and none of us can ever love Him more than she does or love her more than He does. 🙂 How blessed we are in giving ourselves to both of them totally so that with them and by the power of the Holy Spirit, we can glorify our Father.
The miraculous medal is a beautiful reminder of God’s Plan of love: He gave us Jesus through Mary, overshadowed by the Holy Spirit. The Image of Mary with arms extended down to us, with God’s Life of Grace flowing through her hands to us is a powerful image.

The cross on the reverse of the medal with the letter M beneath, and the two hearts remind us that if we are to grow in prayer, we are to grow in suffering for love as they did. Thanks for your reply, dear brother, and for your growing love for God and our Mother.

Thank you, sister 🙂

The original name of the medal is that of ‘Holy Mary’s Immaculate Conception’.

Dear brother,

Thanks much for the link to the Novena. St. Maximilian Kolbe is just the one to help us prepare for the Feast of the Immaculata! 🙂

Something interesting about the medal is that Mother Teresa gave away a medal to everyone she met. And she would use them for other purposes as well.

And her dedication to Mary became outrageously public when she was invited to the U N to receive an honor. When she stood up before the whole assembly to address it, she prayed the Hail Mary…no one said a word against it.

She was some woman. Maybe she should have been named St. Fearless.

But she gave away so many medals she was always running out of them.

Dear Fred,

Thanks for your reply. The title “Mother” fits her in my mind more than any other – although I agree with you she was “fearless” in her pursuit of God’s Will for herself and for all God’s children. She did not fear the powerful of this world nor did she fear the evil one himself because God’s gifts of faith, hope and love grew as Mary’s did throughout her life.

In the Legion of Mary Handbook, there is a section on the Miraculous Medal in which it encourages us to be “living miraculous medals”. More than the medals she gave away, I believe Blessed Mother Teresa gave everyone she met that image of Mother Mary who is the Lord’s Handmaid – filled with His Grace – to share with all. 🙂

Here is a little saying of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

“I never look at the masses as my responsibility; I look at the individual. I can only love one person at a time - just one, one, one. So you begin. I began - I picked up one person. Maybe if I didn’t pick up that one person, I wouldn’t have picked up forty-two thousand…The same thing goes for you, the same thing in your family, the same thing in your church, your community. Just begin - one, one, one.”

This is what our Mother Mary does with the gift of her medal. It is a present to each individual of her devotion…one on one on one… She gives each her special attention thru her medal.

I’m not sure if anyone posted a link to this article about the story of the Miraculous Medal. For those interested or haven’t read it yet, it’s a bit long but absolutely fascinating. I’m currently half way through it and also find the writing style of Father Dirvin just remarkable.
Enjoy! HERE.
Dear brother,

Thanks for both links. The “tour” of the chapel and the long article can help all to learn more about this humble and beautiful little handmaid, St. Catherine Laboure and the apparitions in which Mary gave her the Miraculous Medal for the world.

Dear fred,

Thanks for the quote from Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta. How true it is! By God’s Grace, we can begin with looking at just one and seeing Jesus, loving Him for He told us whatever we do for the least of His brothers and sisters, we do for Him.

Yes, Mary our Mother, is our model in serving Jesus on this earth. By God’s grace, may we, begin today, on this Feast of St. John the Beloved Disciple. May we hear more deeply than ever before, Jesus telling us from His Cross, “Behold your Mother”. Let us take her into our lives that we may learn to serve Him with her.
