Miraculous Medal Turning Bronze

I have a miraculous medal that was my great grandmothers. Yesterday I gave the medal to my sister who was dying. She lived a very hard life full of sin. I gave it to her in hopes that she would receive some graces when she met God. The medal is silver with some light blue trim. Sadly, my sister died today. She had a very painful death as she suffered from stomach cancer. Today my mom removed the medal from her neck to find that Mary was now golden color, and the stars on the back were golden color.
I read on another thread that someone’s rosary had turned “golden” color, and they believed it was the work of the devil. I’m afraid for her soul, but I actually thought the golden color may have been a good sign? Has anyone heard of this happening before? I also thought it may have turned golden because of the contact it had with my sister’s skin (less than 12 hours) - possibily toxic due to her cancer.:confused:
 
I am so sorry about your sister. My prayers are with her and your family.

Have you tried to polish it and see if it comes off? Do you know a jeweler that is Catholic, maybe they could look at it and give you there opinon.

Ahh, I’m so sorry. Don’t think that way. After my mom died, I was worried about where she was one night. Later on that night,my wife and I could smell a circle of rose’s on the back porch. It was so strong, it was like walking into a florist shop. Take what happened to the medal as a good sign, Tim

Do not worry about the colour changing:) I got my miraculous medal when I went to Padua,Italy to visit the tomb of St.Anthony.The medal was in silver/bronze,my mom wore it and her silver necklace became black and so it was the medal,but then a bit by bit both became silver/in bright colour and while the necklace remains silver:) the medal turned into golden colour and now I’m wearing/borrowing the medal with my silver necklace.The medal is now in dark gold,beautiful:) This is a miraculous medal and who wears it devoutly will always be blessed and I am sure your sister is in heaven now,that’s why the medal is now in gold and the changing colour of the miraculous medal means you and all in the house are blessed too:) be faithful to that medal:)There’s no “devil trick”.

Hi, my medal has had the some thing happen to it. I’ve had it since I was a child, at least 30 years. Mine is made of nickle plated brass, after wearing it so long, and cleaning it when needed, the nickle wore off the raised portions. It may be the same thing happened to yours.

Sorry to hear about your sister, 20 years ago I put my Miraculous Medal around my dying Fathers neck, it went to the grave with him.

I bought another and have been wearing it since then, the silver coating has worn off, and it has exposed a brassy gold look, I just think it’s fair wear and tear.

As far as being the work of the devil statement, don’t pay attention to such nonsense.

Nope, not the devil.

I’d take it as a very good sign.

My rosary clasps turned golden on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception about eight years ago. It was silver the day before, no doubt.

I’ve always taken it as a compliment from Our Lady.

I get worried that she’ll turn it back when I’ve been naughty!:o
 
A lot of medals are brass or copper plated with silver. I had the sasme thing happen. It’s just the silver plating wearing away. It especially happens on the raised parts first.
 
It might mean that your sister was touching and rubbing it—which would be a good indication that she was ‘praying’ with it–if even only the groanings of her heart…

Please know that here in our monastery we will pray for the blessed repose of your sister.

I too have a Miraculous Medal that my grandmother wore, and it to has had the silver wear off.
In the short time your sister wore the medal, it is quite possible that the medications she was taking had an oxidizing affect on the medal, hence the color change.
I would believe that God in his infinite mercy and love for your sister has taken her in his loving arms and now she is in his peace.
St. Augustine said in the Confessions, “O’ Lord you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” I know in my own restlessness I loose touch with God every so often, but even in all of our lives, we can return to Him, who is rich in compassion and love.
Remember that Jesus took dirt and his saliva and made mud to heal the blind man’s eyes, so I’m thinking that a little tarnish can be a holy thing.

Is the medal have zinc in it? I know if you take a penny and let it sit in a mixture of zinc powder and lye, it turns “silver” (actually it’s zinc coated.) If you heat the penny now, it will turn “gold” (the copper and zinc chemically react when heated.)

Could this be similar to what happened?
 
About seven or eight years ago, the clasps on my rosary turned from silver to gold.

At that time, I had been praying the rosary with others in our adoration chapel each morning. Someone would lead and we’d all respond.

While praying the rosary, I always finger the beads and look at them and the crucifix. The day before they turned gold I was doing the same. The entire rosary was completely silver.

The next day was the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th. Due to other circumstances, I wasn’t able to gather for rosary as I customarily do. I went to Mass, but my rosary stayed in my pocket where it ordinarily sits everyday. I don’t carry it anywhere else. It never left my pocket until that evening when I placed the rosary in its pouch on my dresser, as I always do.

The next day, December 9th, I was at a dance competition with my kids. During one of their breaks, I had some time on my hands and I found a nice garden spot to pray my rosary alone. I took the rosary out of the pouch and BAMMM!! The clasps were bright gold. Not the entire rosary (silver), just the clasps that join the main body of the rosary to the part that leads to the crucifix.

There was absolutely no hint of silver on December 7th. None. Nada. On December 9th, I couldn’t miss it. No Doubt. Not a slight touch of gold, not part of the clasp. All three clasps bright gold.

No, I’ve never had it analyzed. But I thank Our Lady and hope I can live up to her expectations.

I’m gonna stand by ole Saint Bonaventure on this one… I don’t think the devil has enough courage to mess with a Miraculous Medal. 😃

Now, from a purely physical POV, Miraculous Medals are often silver plated over brass, or bronze, and the silver plating can rub off quite easily, leaving a goldish cast, particularly in the areas that stand out from the medal, such as Mary, the stars on the back of the medal, etc.

I have several very old medals (early 1900s, France), that are a mixture of silver and bronze, and although they look silver most of the time, after longtime wear, they begin to look a little goldish/yellowish. But if I then wash them in lukewarm water and a bit of gentle liquid soap, they look completely silver again.

I am never without a Miraculous Medal around my neck… I believe they are quite powerful, considering who the designer was 😛

Please don’t tell people you’re sure X is in Heaven now. You don’t know that. We need to pray for the souls who die, not presume canonization on them.

There is a very reasonable explanation for why the medal (and Rosary) changed colour. Most metal jewelry is copper that is plated with either nickel, or silver. When it’s worn on the skin, the metal reacts with the substances in perspiration and cause a chemical reaction that either eats away at the plated metal and the under metal comes through, or the reaction causes a change in colour.
