I have a couple of health conditions that put me at a higher risk for having miscarriages. I’m not married right now but am in a serious relationship. My question is, is it okay for me to pursue marriage even though I know it’s very possible I’ll have a miscarriage? I don’t want to practice NFP to prevent pregnancies altogether because I do want children. I really want to get married someday but I hope it isn’t wrong to do so. 😦

There is no problem with you marrying. Of course if you have a medical condition you know of before marriage, that can affect your ability to have children, you owe it to your future husband to disclose that before you marry, but if he’s OK with that then there’s no barrier to marriage.

Infertile couples are allowed to marry so I don’t see what the issue is. A miscarriage is not a deliberate abortion. It’s outside of your control.

I would urge you to contact the Paul VI institute…they can likely help!!! (and they train doctors who are all over the place)

Also perhaps together with a pilgrimage to Lourdes…

If you already know you have an increased risk of miscarriage there are methods you can use to reduce them - especially if you get in touch with the Pope Paul IV Institute and/or a very knowledgable ob/gyn. There is no reason you cannot get married & attempt to have children. Even if you’ve had multiple miscarriages there is no reason to avoid pregnancy due to that reason. Each pregnancy is different and sometimes God provides what you need/want all in one cute little package. It is important that your fiance knows of your increased risk of miscarriage & that you try to do something about reducing that risk if/when you become pregnant. However, you are not technically required to do anything considered (by you & husband & perhaps a trusted/knowledgable priest) excessive to avoid miscarriage once you do get pregnant.

Personal story here… I have been told since I was about 18 that my endometriosis, retroverted uterus, and PCOS that I’d have difficulty getting pregnant. I got pregnant on my honeymoon! I did miscarry four times, but I have 2 wonderful healthy (full-term) children with 4 saints in Heaven watching over us all. I contacted a PPVI ob/gyn & was put on progesterone for 4-5 of my pregnancies - sometimes it worked (my 2 year old boy & his 7 month old sister), but the rest of the time it didn’t. There are NO guarantees even if you seek medical assistance. Just pray for peace.

Inwe86;6823482My question is said:
The three fonts of morality are the basis for determining if any act is moral or immoral:
  1. intention – you do not intend the miscarriages, but instead you intend the goods of marriage, including children.
  2. moral object – miscarriages are not abortions, so there is no question of an intrinsically evil act. And marriage certainly has good moral objects.
  3. consequences – this is the font that will determine whether or not it is moral for you to marry. The reasonably anticipated good consequences must outweigh the reasonably anticipated bad consequences. The goods of marriage are many and weighty. However the foreseen but unintended death(s) of prenatals is also of substantial weight. NFP can certainly lessen the risk of pregnancy with miscarriage, so this good also carries some moral weight.
You will have to weigh these goods yourself, and perhaps seek some advice from a priest. It would also be helpful for whomever may assist you in this decision to know what the likelihood is of a successful pregnancy, versus the likelihood of a miscarriage.

Some people have lots of miscarriages before they have children. My aunt had two miscarriages and a still birth and then had four children so it’s worthwhile not to give up home up to number five but seek help from Pope Paul Institute.

I’m doing research on healthy eating in pregnancy and I would advise you to avoid all herbs and herbal supplements like herbal teas, herbal medicines, herbed stuffing and herby sausages. It’s also better to eat lots of fruit rather than green leafy vegetables. Dairy food is better than soy produce as soy reduces fertility.

Thank you all for your responses! I have disclosed this information to my boyfriend and he has no qualms about marrying me 🙂 And I would definitely consider adoption if I couldn’t conceive my own child 👍
