My brother’s wife recently left the family, including their 17-year-old son, Craig. My brother is a successful businessman, and Craig is a very bright person. Ever since his mother left, he has been lashing out in various ways. Usually, he would just talk back to his father, but lately his actions have become more severe. As a Catholic, I was very offended by his most recent outburst.
He went to our local parish, Saint Xavier. He then posted an advertisement for a “pet blessing” to take place during the regular Saturday night mass. Pet blessings usually take place in the daytime and not in the actual parish. However, quite a few people believed the sign and showed up with pets
. I was at that mass. He later admitted to the prank when the church threatened to take serious action if the perpetrator were caught. I don’t agree with the way that his father handled the situation. His first reaction was laughter, then he tried to become more stern with his son, but it was obvious that he had a “boys will be boys” attitude about the whole ordeal.
I know that my brother is upset that his mother left the family for another man, but his son needs some strictness and boundaries. His father did force him to take an after-school job since Craig stopped working to his full academic potential. I think his father just wanted to force him to once again get serious with school, but instead he became very good friends with some bad influences at work. His place of employment is American Apparel. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the company, but they promote a pretty hedonistic lifestyle (even though I kind of like some of the clothes:blush
. I think that he might be involved in cocaine usage as he started to steal amounts of money from his father. He is also becoming very thin, but he says that he just wants to have the proper appearance to work at the front register.
How can I convince his father to get more strict without infringing on their personal business? I know that my brother feels guilty about his mother leaving, even though it wasn’t his fault. I really do think that my nephew needs more rules.
