I’m writing a story about a teen who has to go through scrupulosity before redemption, and it’s triggered by a Mass he attends where a misguided priest gives a homily that sets off a too-high fear of God and lack of self-esteem. Do you know of any OT/NT passages that could help me, esp. ones dealing with the innate sinfulness of men, God’s wrath, and how we will never deserve Jesus’ love/forgiveness? Thanks!

*Matthew 15:22-28 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon.” But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” And he answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”*Of course, Jesus after seeing her remain faithful, praises her and answers her prayer, but your character could misconstrue this.

Also misconstruable:Proverbs 30:32 If you have played the fool and exalted yourself, or if you have planned evil, clap your hand over your mouth!

Isaiah 5:21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.

2 Corinthians 11:30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. Hope that helps. 🙂
