Misinterpretation of the Qur'an

I was thinking about how many people misinterpret the Bible, often taking it literally and out of context. Now I have not studied much about Islam, and therefore I do not know much about it. But I think that we may often misinterpret the Qur’an as well.I am sure there are some posters here who are Muslim, so I was wondering if I was correct. Or… should the Qur’an be taken literally…(I doubt this.)

As well, many people say that the Qur’an never says women must cover their heads (with a hijab, or anything else.) I would argue that it is part of Islamic culture. After all, there are many things we do that are not stated in the Bible directly. That doesn’t mean we are wrong to do it (Some Christians may disagree, but I’m going with a Catholic view on this.)

Now I’m not trying to say I support or do not support Muslim women covering their head. And this is a different issue from misinterpreting the Qur’an, however, it ties into the fact that we do not have an accurate view on Muslims and their beliefs (well, unless you have studied Islam I suppose.)

Think of the Qur’an as the map to guide us in the journey of life and think of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as the legend by which to correctly read this map.

The Prophet (pbuh) did not really need to “explain” every aspect of the Qur’an because his companions as well as his family members used to watch him really closely in just about everything that he did.

The hadeeth of Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) states that – “He (pbuh) was a living Qur’an”… and this means that his way of teaching Islam was to act and live according to the Qur’an and then his followers would watch him and do the same.

And the Qur’an itself affirms this:

Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for any one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the Praise of Allah. … 033.021

Just as we should never be foolish enough to try to read a map without referring to the accompanying legend, then only a fool will attempt to interpret the Qur’an in a way which is different than how the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) himself followed that which is written in the Qur’an.

And so, misinterpretation of the Qur’an is not really a big issue in Islam because it is the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) himself who is the ultimate authority on the Qur’an and it is his Sunnah that Muslims always refer to in order to get the most accurate interpretation of the Qur’an possible.

The authority in Islam is therefore the Quran and Sunnah. People who have studied Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) give their interpretation on minor issues because there are no conflicting opinions among them on major issues.

The 4 schools of law in Islam i.e. Shaféi, Hanbali, Hanafi and Maliki unanimously agree that the Hijab is obligatory in Islam.

I assume that most Muslim people know how to interpret the Qur’an properly, however non-Muslim people often do.

Anyways, I’m taking world religions next year (In my high school, which is Catholic, it is obligatory), which would include Islam, and I’m very curious to find out more about it.

Not because I want to convert, but because people talk about Islam and Muslims so much, and often in a negative way, which is incorrect. People make out Muslim people to be terrible…well they make out most religious people to be terrible. And they are not! I have friends who practise Islam, and they’re wonderful people. Poeple hate what they don’t understand, so I do want to be informed.

The Qur’an commands that women cover their heads in Sura 24:31, this is not a disputed point. The only dispute is from some Muslims who claim that the Qur’an mandates women also cover their face, though this view has been rejected by the vast majority and the evidence for it is very weak.

What exactly are adornments-definition?

What I think is interesting is that a woman is not to show her adornments.

If she breast feeds a strange man which would involve showing her adornment then she can be in the company of said unrelated man without a chaperone.
