does anyone here remember the first Roman missal and why it was completely amended -considering lex orandi,lex credendi was there something wrong with the original prayers that were said in thousands of Masses worldwide every day - any comments - twinc

first missal? Pope Pius V’s, AD 1570 (I think)
I don’t remember much from that year.
probably all in Latin.

BTW twinc, (this has nothing to do with your question but…) here in the States,
The Roman Missal, Third Edition, the ritual text containing prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass, is now being prepared for publication. In the United States, seven publishers (Catholic Book Publishing Corp., Liturgical Press, Liturgy Training Publications, Magnificat, Midwest Theological Forum, USCCB Communications, and World Library Publications) will publish ritual editions and are now advertising their plans and will soon accept pre-orders. The Roman Missal will be implemented in the United States of America on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011. The ritual editions should start arriving in parishes around October 1.

btw the Roman Missal here referred to is that of 1570 and its replacement as late as 1969 - so after all those years what was replaced and why ? - twinc

It gives the major changes as

1604 – Pope Clement VIII
1634 – Pope Urban VIII
1884 – Pope Leo XIII
1920 – Pope Benedict XV
1962 – Pope John XXIII
1970 – Pope Paul VI
1975 – Pope Paul VI
2002 – Pope John Paul II

In addition, there were a number of other minor revisions to the text, published as “reprints” which incorporated minor changes. The most recent of these were in 1957 after Pope Pius XII’s revisions to the rites of Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum in 1955, and in 2008, when Pope Benedict XVI incorporated a number of additional prayers, included those for recently canonized saints as well as for the celebration of an extended Vigil for Pentecost.

it is incredible and incredulous that no mention is made regarding the general replacement by the ‘Novus Ordo’ in 1969. The late Michael Davies wrote “the extent to which the 'Novus Ordo Missae departs from the theology of the Council of Trent can best be gauged by comparing the prayers which the Consilium removed from the liturgy to those removed by Cranmer…the coincidence is not simply striking - it is horrifying”

The ‘restored Roman Missal’ was promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1969,in response to the decrees of the Second Vatican Council.The old Roman Missal contains several passages that express ancient doctrines on Creation,the Fall and the Flood.Much of the Canon of the Mass is known to date back to before the 4th century,including our Lord’s own words and other prayers dating from Apostolic times.To change the interpretation of Genesis undermines the traditions of the liturgy as well as dogma[Daylight] - twinc
