Missal first aid

Hello,

Can anyone provide suggestions on how to fix up my missal? It’s an old one, from the 1920s and while the text block is still going strong, the leather cover (especially the front) is starting to come apart. I was thinking of taping up the sides, but hoped someone else had discovered a better way.

Google “old book restorations” and you’ll find many places that will fix it for you for a reasonable fee.

Well…this is what I did for my son a few years back: I used the clothy-type first aid tape and ran it down the torn edges of the back, or spine as I guess you would call it. The tape was white, the book was black. Then with a brush I used black paint to cover the tape. It actually looked quite nice. But this is a do-it-yourself job, not professional by any means. As far as I know, it held up pretty well. I have also inserted satin ribbons into the spine of the book so he has nice markers to use. The back and pages will separate if you hold the book just so and then there is a little tunnel running down between. With a dab of hot glue you can install a new ribbon and have a nice book mark, or even several if you like. Necessity is the mother of invention!
