My favorite Mass (of those lecitly available) is the NO Mass in Latin. Unfortunatly, it is harder to find one of these than it is to find a TLM (indult).

My childhood memories are of a Mass that I belive was the Missal of 1965. I still have the Missal I used as a child. The Mass incorporates some of the Changes recommended by V2 but still includes many of the traditional elements. For example, the prayers at the foot of the altar are still there. My understanding is that there is no current approval to say the Mass using the Missal of 1965.

Does anyone know why this version of the Mass didn’t last?

The 1965 Missal was never designed to be a lasting edition. It was issued ad experimentum to get a feel for how the people would take to the changes. A secondary purpose was to see if the bishops themselves liked the changes. Both groups, apparently, felt that more change was needed to address some of the fundamental concerns that the bishops had expressed at Vatican II.

Too bad - I rather liked it and also have a copy. It actually seemed much more in keeping with what the documents of Vatican II intended than does the 1970 version.

The 1965 missal is really attractive. Have a look.

Note: I don’t necessarily endorse the other material on the author’s website.* Caveat emptor*!
