I’ve been thinking about buying a missal for myself lately (for NO Mass), and I was wondering if people could discuss the pros and cons of the various ones out there. I like the look and size of the zippered St. Joseph Missal set, but I’ve also heard great things about the Daily Roman Missal by Scepter. What other options are there, and what would you use? If your opinions differ depending on if you would use it at Mass, or primarily for personal devotion and reference at home, please note that too.

I should also mention that I’m fully aware of Magnificat and love the publication, but I’m looking for something that can be used as a beautifully crafted, more permanent reference.

I would suggest that you stick with the Magnificat for now. There is a revision of the Liturgy in the works right now, and when it comes out, the Missals will change. I believe that it is supposed to be out within the next year or so.

Peace,
Linda

Fair enough, but this will only change the English translation, as far as I’m aware. I have no problem putting off the purchase for a while. I’d still be interested in hearing people’s recommendations on the various missals, as the merits of the various versions will likely still hold true.

I use the Saint Joseph Sunday Missal as well as the St. Joseph weekday missal Vol.1 and Vol.2.

I am very happy with these missal’s and after the changes I most likely will purchase the new editions.

These missal’s are very easy to understand/read…I’m happy.

Is there any difference between the regular edition and the zipper-cover edition?

I use the Scepter Daily Missal because it is complete, easy to navigate, and has over 300 pages of devotions and prayers, it is very useful.
I’ve seen this one too. It doesn’t hurt that it’s published by Opus Dei either. So, in what ways are the St. Joseph’s and the Scepter Daily Missals different? Any negatives with either version?

I use the Saint Joseph Missal. It is the zipper leather one. And I like it fine. But I don’t have any comparison, except the missal and hymnal in the pews at Mass. I am rather comfortable with my own; and enjoy having it to follow during Mass. It is easy to follow, and I like all the readings before 1st and 2nd readings and the Gospel. It also has prayers in the back, as well as the rosary and stations of the cross.
