Missal Ribbons

Hello,

My TLM Missal only has two ribbons and I have decided I should add three or four. Does anybody know how to add ribbons to a missal?

I do not know about a “Missal” - never had one - but this is what I did to add ribbons to my “Bible”.

I took and cut a piece of leather to the width of the “Backbone” of the Bible and about 2 inches long. I glued some ribbons to that (spaced about where i needed them). Then I open the Bible to the about the middle of it and turned the pages down on the the table. This “Opened” or “Created” a space for me to tuck the leather with the ribbons down into the space created along the “Back Bone” . I also put a spot of glue on the leather to hold it in it’s place once it was in it’s place. I am aware that the new ribbons are above the “threaded” backbone or binding but it works for me. Hope this may give you a idea.
 
Oh for heaven’s sake. Just do what my grandmother did. Put a rubber band through the first page of the Ordinary, a holy-card for John F Kennedy in the current Proper of Seasons, another card for your own son who died in Vietnam in the current Proper of Saints, a laminated Ex Indumentis relic of The Little Flower at the Prayers After Mass, and stick the parish bulletin in at the Examination of Conscience Before Confession.
 
if the binding allow it, select ribbons of the appropriate size and color then hot-glue them inside the spine.
still easier to simply buy the inserts that have several ribbons attached or simply use bookmarks
 
I have restored several older missals of which their ribbons were falling apart with age. I make my own inserts.
  • I simply use ribbons of the desired color.
  • Hot glue them to a piece of cardboard that has been pre-sized to fit into the spine.
  • Wait for glue to dry.
  • Slide your new ribbon tab into the spine.
  • Cut the ribbons to size.
  • Heat a paperclip over a lighter or candle.
  • Use the paperclip to fuse the end of the ribbon to avoid fraying.
