The parish I am going to now does not use the NAB translation for their Mass readings (except, in most cases, the Responseorial Psalm). I believe the readings are from either the RSV or NRSV.

I am wondering if there is a Sunday and Daily Missal published that uses the RSV instead of the NAB.

Perhaps you could talk to the pastor and request that he use the only approved version for the Mass in the USA - the NAS?

And just where would the Tridentiners get the authority to use the RSV for the Mass in Latin? Was the RSV approved forthe Mass back in1962? I think not…

The Epistle and the Gospels for the Extraordinary Mass are proclaimed in Latin. An Indult exists for the Epistles and Gospels to be proclaimed again (or at the same time) in the vernacular using “an approved text”.

This differes from the approved Lectionary for the Ordinary Form, which are completly seperate texts that are approved differently.

The “approved texts” for the vernacular proclaimation in the Extraordinary Form are any translation that carries at Imprimatur (which the RSV-CE does).

For use in the Ordinary Form, the Vatican recently approved an entirely RSV-CE 2E Lectionary at the request of the Bishops of Trinidad.

It is currently that only English language Lectionary that was approved without any changes.

( The text used at Mass differs in several places from the NAB, the Vatican required these changes before the texts could be used at Mass)

Actually, Martini, it’s the NAB. Although I am not a big fan of the NAB translation (I started a thread on this), we are obligated to use this for the Ordinary Form of the Mass. However, the Extraordinary (TLM) form carries with it different texts, as Brendan noted.

I should mention the fact that we are stuck with the NAB because the USCCB owns the rights to it. I would recommend reading an article by Fr. Richard John Neuhaus that I posted in the lectionary thread. It’s a real eye-opener. But, to the OP, we do need to use the approved Lectionary for use in the United States.

the RSV and Jerusalem bible had previously been approved for liturgical use in the US, and there are still out there someplace publications with the lectionary in that form, that was rescinded in the late 80s (somebody here has the date) when most problems with the NAB translation were fixed and that became the only approved version, (NAB psalms were still not approved not sure what their status is now). We have older versions of some RCIA materials for breaking open the Word which contain the readings from the RSV, namely the Journey of Faith leader guides from Liguori.

***This is not a thread to discuss RSV vs NAB in the Lectionary. ***

All I was asking is if there is a Sunday/Daily Missal that can be bought that has the readings in RSV not NAB. No more no less.

Sorry, I meant to type NAB…mea culpa.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. For my part, I thought you meant that your parish was using the RSV in lieu of the Lectionary. Mea cupla.

Hey, it’s a personal preference on what you buy for your own use. My old Daily Roman Missal had the translation from the Jerusalem Bible. Unfortunately, it sustained some water damage and I had to buy a replacement. However, the new Daily Roman Missal had the lectionary translations in it.

As long as you aren’t going to proclaim from the Daily Roman Missal, you’re pretty much okay.

Yeah? That seems quite odd that only the NAB is approved for the normative Mass (in the USA), yet anything with an imprimatur – including some fairly marginal versions like the NJB and the Living Bible would somehow be appropriate for the extraordinary rite? Well then again, maybe they would.

The “Daily Roman Missal” from Scepter used to have the RSV text, until it was no longer approved for use by the bishops (cf. previous posts about the switch to NAB.)

They no longer publish the RSV edition, but if you did a search online you might well be able to find a used copy. They are nice, sturdy missals, so if you can find a used one it would probably still hold up well. They were in print up until the NAB switch, probably about ten??? years ago.

I currently have both the Daily and Sunday Missals with the NAB readings. I use them mainly for journaling my reflections on them. It just, when I am at Mass, I like to read along when during the readings. It is kind of hard to do that when the words do no match. Plus, my Sunday Missal is starting to get beat up a little.

That reminds me. Needs to do my Evening Prayers and journaling. 😊

Seeing as how you are in/near Detroit, which, last time I checked, was fairly close to Canada, you might suspect the readings you hear are from the NRSV, more so than the RSV. (The “official” Canadian lectionary uses the NRSV.)

I know there were Novus Ordo missals with readings adapted from the 1966 Jerusalem Bible, but I don’t know who published them.

In the US, when the three-volume Sunday lectionary and the weekday lectionary, based on the RNAB, were finally approved and published, our beloved shepherds immediately withdrew permission for lectionaries based on the RSV-CE and JB from being used any further. This occurred somewhere around 2002.

Re English translations of the Epistle and Gospel readings for the TLM: the TLM’s schedule of readings do NOT correspond to what is in the lectionary for the Novus Ordo. Prior to the introduction of English in the Mass in the US, the translation from which the Epistle and Gospel readings was either the Confraternity NT of 1941, or the venerable Douay-Rheims.

I will have to check more closely next Saturday. I may now have a reason to head over the Detroit River. Anyone know a good Catholic bookstore over in Windsor?

Looks like it may be RSV. I just found this on Ignatius Press:

ignatius.com/Images/Products/rsvl1.jpg Lectionary (RSV), Vol. 1
Code: RSVL1-H
**Your Price: **$90.00
ignatius.com/Images/Products/rsvl2.jpg Lectionary (RSV), Vol. 2
Code: RSVL2-H
**Your Price: **$180.00
ignatius.com/Images/Products/rsvlset-h.jpg RSV Lectionary: 2 Volume Set
Code: RSVLSET-H
**Your Price: **$270.00
No Missals though
Could be; but as I mentioned, there aren’t too many readings in the NO lectinary that coincide with those of the TLM.
