Hi,

I wish to purchase a 1962 missal, and have found a website that sells them; now if I purchase a daily missal, will it contain the Mass settings for Sunday and other Holy days of obligation or would I need to purchase a Sunday missal.

I also have The Small Missal that was printed in 1959 that contains The proper of the mass for all Sundays and the principal feasts of the year. The rite of Benediction, compline for Sundays and other devotions.

Is the small missal the same as the 1962 Sunday missal?

Thank you.

My husband just surprised me with the wonderful gift of the 1962 Daily Missal and Liturgical Manual with Vespers for Sundays and Feasts from the Editio Typica of the Roman Missal and Breviary, 1962. Baronius Press, London, published this missal and it is absolutely wonderful! It even contains Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Letter “Summorum Pontificum” (or his motu proprio).

This daily missal contains the Mass readings for everyday of the Liturgical year plus the Mass readings for many of the Saint Feast Days, and for all of the Solemnities. Besides all of that, it contains really uplifting prayers and devotions for daily use (morning, afternoon, evening prayers and those for before/after Confession and Holy Communion).

My husband bought this one at religious run book store in Chicago (Pauline Books), but I am sure you can find it online 🙂

So if you want a 1962 Missal that contains the Mass readings for EVERYDAY of the year (Sundays and weekdays, feast days, Solemnities), I strongly suggest this edition!

God bless!

I have the Baronius Missal too, only mine was published in 2004. The only difference is that mine does not contain the MP. I love this Missal. The section on Confession is especially great. It has prayers for before and after Confession that I have not seen anywhere else, and the examination of conscience is excellent. 👍

The texts are practically the same. The major changes between 1960-61 involved and rankings and such which really don’t matter. I don’t think you’d find it difficult to use the 1959 Sunday missal at a '62 Mass.

You can find cheap ones at www.olrl.org. You have to send a check to em but they are usually dirt cheap and they dont make a profit, I get my stuff from them.

and I was looking at this one to start praying the divine office southwellbooks.com/divine-office-the-officium-divinum-2080-p.asp
Pious, you know it’s abridged?

Baronius hopes to publish the Office soon:

**English-Latin Breviary
The Breviary project is now in the typesetting stage and will soon be ready for proofreading! In order to assist daily prayer life, we have decided to add some beautiful images similar to those adorning older Breviaries.

After the typesetting has been finished, the next major tasks will be the rigorous proofreading process. As we have been getting many offer of help with the proofreading, we hope that this task can be completed this year, although given our very limited resources (and hence staff) please join us in praying for its completion.** That’s been up on their website for some time.

The two sets published by Catholic Book Publishing puzzles me. The abridgment, “Christian Prayer” has what looks like a more complete set of little offices compared to their 4 volume set.

Then there’s matter of the Gospels. I’ve read merely, having nothing to which compare, that the 4 volume Office gives us a “less.” I’ve never dug about to find out if that be so, not knowing how I would. Even as I type, I wish I knew more about the in’s and out’s. I really don’t know to what they were referring unless readings from the Gospels for a previous generation were part of the Office.

But I not knowing what constitutes “complete” am in the dark. When I go to http://www.breviary.net/ there’s much that doesn’t appear in 4 volume Office set I own. At least it appears so to me.

I’m anticipating Baronius’ publishing of the Office. Hope they use the Douay. Also, thank-you for the hearty recommendation of their 1962 Missal, Blessed Wife. The readings are out of the Douay, yes?

Yes, I realised that afterwards; but as I have never prayed the divine office and do not know how to, I assume that this book will explain on how to do it.

I am in the UK, so I have not been able to find many on-line companies that sell such books.

I went to Una Voce Scotland’s Day of Recollection in Glasgow, today, and some nice man GAVE ME a daily missal… for free! It was an old one he had that he said someone had given to him. So, he gave it to me, since we’re new to the Latin Mass in Glasgow. 🙂

Good deal. Hard to beat that price 👍

Without ever seeing it, I wouldn’t by the Angelus Breviary. Looking at the table of contents, it has the Lauds and Compline, but it seems that the Lauds and Vespers would be more appropriate if only doing two offices each day.

I have their 1962 Missal, and it’s excellent, but I don’t understand why they chose the Compline over the Vespers for the breviary. If you’re really looking for a pre VII breviary, I’d either wait for the Baronius or try ebay. But I don’t have anything against the current Liturgy of the Hours. **Shorter Christian Prayer **(Lauds and Vespers only) or Christian Prayer (adds the little offices and a selection of the Office of Readings) both are good to use.

Thank you for the replies.

I just checked the link for the Daily Missal in my first link in my second post and noticed it was by Baronius Press; so I have ordered the Missal and will await for Baronius to bring out the Breviary.

When I was cleaning out my mom’s apartment after she died, I found her old missal from the 1930s (!), which looks to still be in great shape (has a plastic cover and all).

I forget the name of it but it was the name of a priest (maybe the one you mentioned, lasance? I forget.)

Anyway, I normally would be more than happy to give it to someone here who is a TC but I think I’d like to keep it, since it was my mom’s.
