Missing a sunday mass unintentionally

So what do Catholics do if they are going on vacation or have to leave town or are sick?

Good answers above…
Basically - it boils down to using common sense - as informed by our Love for God and our Fellow man.

Vacation or out of town?? - In planning, the trip, include mass attendance int he planning.
Sickness?? - Do not expose the Brethren to your illness.
Emergencies?? - Your honest intent is sufficient…

See how these things flow? Not from a “follow the rules” mentality, but from a “Love of God and Love of neighbor” mentality.

vacation and leaving town are not problems since there are Catholic churches in just about any place. If you are too sick to go out, or taking care of someone who can’t go out, you don’t have a Mass obligation in any case.

Sometimes it just happens, with the best intentions you still miss Mass, that is not a sin of any kind. Every careless lapse of judgement, every episode of forgetfulness, every mis-calculation of time, is not a sin.

Mortal sin requires the serious, informed, deliberate, knowledgeable decision to deliberately flout God’s laws, it cannot happen casually or by accident or oversight.

If you miss Sunday Mass you can always go to a Daily Mass. You don’t have to go to a Sunday Mass if you don’t want to. Daily Mass is not less than Sunday Mass…

Can. 1247 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass.

Sometimes we miss things. I wouldn’t go as far as calling it a mortal sin. If you usually attend mass it is alright to occasionally miss one here and there.

Nope. It is still a mortal sin to deliberately miss Mass. In the case of the OP, this was still irresponsible and slothful to not have planned when and how to get to Mass while still celebrating the New Year. There were 2 afternoon Masses and potentially one on the vigil before the celebration started, plenty of opportunity to get to Mass.

Go to confession before receiving communion again.
