Missing mass a mortal sin? Confession?

Hoping somebody can clear this up for me on what the Church actually teaches.

I heard this from a friend when she didn’t go to receive Eucharist. She was told that if she missed Mass on a Sunday she couldn’t receive the Eucharist until she went to confession.

From what I understand (for the practicing Catholic) the only reasons not to receive Eucharist is if you’ve commited a mortal sin or are not in Communion with the church (meaning you purposely go against the teachings without planning on changing)

Can anyone help me understand what the church actually teaches here? THANKS!
 
I’m certain there is someone with more knowledge and authority than me to answer your question, but I do know this. 2181 of the Catechism says, “Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.”

I would think a grave sin is a mortal sin.
