First off I LOVE attending Mass and hope to soon be close enough to a parish where I can attend daily again!

This Sunday I have so many things going on to two hours it takes to attend Mass makes the rest of the day complicated and rushed.

What’s up is I purchased a new travel trailer and have to put it through its paces and find all that’s wrong with it by tomorrow morning when I take full possession Monday morning. It’s 20 miles north, parish is 20 miles south. I have to bring my dog and it’s Tucson 100° so can’t park here in truck and go to more local to trailer Mass.

I work 50-60 hours weeks on top of this… While I should could use that hour of communion I feel so distracted and forced to complete so many tasks today I doubt I’d even be able to concentrate…

Since I came back to Church 12 years ago I never missed for such a “trivial” matter and can’t discern if I’m being over scrupulous or what…

Thanks!

As long as you have - what’s important to you - prioritized -

I agree! with both of these replies and am trying to make Mass. Nothing will set me straighter than the Eucharist!

But I’m 20 miles from parish in the opposite direction. I have to take my dog to trailer as part of it is getting her used to it before a real trip later this fall.

It’s not like my favorite football teams are playing or an entertainment date. It’s something that HAS to be done today and not to my schedule.

The dealer has been a major frustration and broken almost every promise. Once I signed the check it was back to smoking cigarettes out back…

Thanks

Your dog can get used to the trailer next Saturday, or Thursday after work, or every Tuesday between now and your trip.

Just my opinion, but, I won’t do business with such an unscrupulous person. I spend my money with those who stand by their products or work. The are other trailers for sale from honest people.

Is there no church close to the direction you’re traveling? If there was, then I’d include Mass as part of my travels.

If there’s no local parish, I’d plan ahead and hit the Saturday Vigil ahead of time to fulfill my Sunday obligation.

95*-100* is no big deal. It’s September; it’s not like we’re in the 120’s. 🙂 It’s practically sweater weather. As long as he has shade and water, your dog should be fine. What do you do with him when you’re working 60 hours a week?

–edit–

Ah, I see your dealer is unscrupulous? Why do you want to do business with someone you don’t trust? Save yourself a headache and buy your product from someone who will stand behind what they sell. Even if it’s a little more $$ up-front, if we’re talking about travel trailers, spend the money to do it right, rather than saving money up front… and then keep paying as problems crop up. You want something reliable, not something that will surprise you with an issue when you’re trying to drive through the Rockies. 🙂

You are not a dog owner are you?

Not only is this cruel it is illegal!

You go sit in the car for an hour with the windows cracked and no fan and tell us how it goes! My gosh!

I work at home and my dog hangs with me or I leave here with AC on at home…

I didn’t say lock him in a car.

I said put him in the shade and make sure he has water.

You live in AZ. I live in Texas. In my part of Texas, we get triple digit weather from May all the way past Columbus Day.

Amazingly, dogs manage to survive outside. I hope you don’t have a husky or something in the desert… that would be pretty cruel. 😉

Well these are professional liars… you get a sense but you’re evaluating the trailer, they really do very little but rely the price. I did all my research online and KNEW the trailer very well. Only one around only option. Coulda drove 1000 miles and paid more and then still not KNOW because dealers are professional liars for the most part.

I went in with my guard up and paid attention to the trailer and didn’t put much faith in the salesman, didn’t really have to and had to have faith on the last day he would do as he said; he did not.

BTW I bought an Airstream! I had a small question about MSRP and called AS. 30 minutes later I heard from dealer sales manager who sent clarifying documents and had the tone of a scolded child having heard from AS regional manager. They will be getting a full report when it’s all said and done!

On Sundays, we should plan all our other activities around Mass. You are trying to squeeze Mass around your other activities. That’s why you are so stressed. Think of it this way: Mass HAS to get done today. Plan everything else around it. Consider your spiritual “things to do” just as important, and actually more important, than the trailer, the dog, your 60-hr a week job, etc.

Pretend you find yourself in a situation with more things that HAVE to get done in a day than is humanly possible - none having to do with church - take kid to urgent care for a sprained wrist, deal with a trailer, pack because you are leaving for a trip tomorrow, finish a report for work or you’ll get in trouble, etc. What would you do? You’d either find help or pick the things that are most urgent and let something slide, since you have no choice. Probably taking the kid to urgent care won’t be the one item you let slide, would it? Why is that? Because the kid is more important than your job or the trailer. Now decide what’s more important from all the things that HAVE to get done today.

One thing I DO KNOW if it was about my dogs welfare alone or attending Mass, Christ would prefer I take care of the dog!

You’re trying to suggest I go to a parish and hope to find a spot in the shade )because no one likes to park in the shade in Tucson!) and tie the dog up outside… with a bowl of water…

My gosh!

I DO!

I shoulda used Google first!

From Catechism on CA:

“Since a “grave cause” is needed to excuse one from this obligation it would be a serious or mortal sin to willfully skip Mass on Sunday or a Holy Day of Obligation, as the Church has always taught. Reasons such as the necessity to work to support one’s family, child care, personal sickness or the care of the sick, necessary travel etc. would excuse a person on a particular occasions. Those who have continuing reason to be excused should consult their pastor.”

Obligation is to take part in the liturgy of the mass each Sunday, not attend Church for Eucharist. If you take time to watch online mass or study the readings and some prayer time, you’re good. Anyone want to tell me differently?

I would leave your dog home and go to mass, if it were me. It isnt a priority that your dog needs to get used to the trailer TODAY and 20 miles out of your way isn’t that far to drive.

OP, talk to your priest and explain the situation. If you do miss mass, confess it.

Although if possible, I would leave dog home, go to mass, go home and get dog, and go to trailer. I wouldn’t care about the driving.

Do you need to confess missing mass if you take part in the liturgy?

A travel trailer purchase is NOT a serious reason to miss mass.

Illness, caring for the ill, hazardous weather… those are serious reasons.

You need to reprioritize.

Call up the rectory and see if the priest can talk to you about it. I’m sure if you will explain the situation, he will grant dispensation.

20 miles each way.

I’m gonna say many of you are not very Christian! You are accusatory and legalistic. You sound like 1950’s nuns with rulers to smack knuckles. You act like Mass is an obligation MORE than the gift it is! We go to Mass out of love not law!

Typical of CA an embarrassing lack of compassion and nit picky legalistic argumentative tones that completely miss the point! I never asked “what’s your opinion” and as I said previously should have looked it up myself.

Some of you really need to look at your motivations; are you trying to be understanding and helpful to someone who is struggling with a day that has gotten away from his control or acting like medieval inquisitors.

Sorry that you disagree with me and think that I am being legalistic and without compassion. I just didnt see how purchasing a trailer and getting your dog used to it trumps worshiping and offering sacrifice to the Lord on His day, although you of course are free to not agree! I was only thinking about what I would do in that situation and I don’t consider myself a legalistic person or have scruples. If you are concerned about it just talk to your priest and/or go to confession tomorrow.
