Missing mass due to wisdom teeth removal?

Ok, this Friday I’m getting my wisdom teeth cut out. They are giving me drugs so I’m completely “out” during the operation. My worry though is that I might not be able to attend mass next weekend. I don’t know if these drugs will end up making me sick, extremely tired, or if the pain from the actual teeth removal could end up being too much.

Pretty much I’m wondering if these drugs make me sick, or too tired to drive, or I’m in pain from the removal if it would be mortally sinful to miss mass still?

It’s not that I want to miss mass, I’m hoping that I don’t get any bad side effects from the drugs and the pain is bearable, but if I do get bad side effects will missing mass be ok?

No offense, Invader, but do you seriously, honestly, really think it’s a mortal sin to miss Mass when you’re in total pain from surgery and recovering from anasthesia? If you’re in pain, recovering, God is hardly going to condemn you to hell for this. You’re being way way way too overly-scrupulous here, friend. If you’re sick, you don’t go to Mass. God loves and understands your situation. You’re thinking too deeply here. Just trust in a loving God.

If you are advised to avoid solid foods, do not receive communion. Simply going to Mass might be ok, but the combination of the drugs and the pain from the surgery might make you feel uncomfortable away from home- if that’s the case, stay home- ask for a dispensation from your pastor, if it would make you feel better.
 
Your mouth also may be very swollen, you may not even be able to open it large at all… I think if you are not up for it you may need to miss mass.
 
It is unlikely that dental surgery on Friday will make you sick enough to miss mass two days later. The anesthesia would be out of your system by then. One way to judge is, if you would consider yourself ill enough to stay home from work or from a movie you have been wanting to see, you are sick enough to stay home from mass.

If you have a fever or can’t drive, you shouldn’t go out.

If you stay home because you don’t feel well enough to go out, it is no sin at all.
 
I have had wisdom teeth pulled and removed through surgery (with anesthesia), never has the pain been so bad that two days later I wasn’t able to return to my regular activities. I may have had to take extra strenght tylenol after the first day using perscription pain killers, but never needed anything stronger after the first day. But I have a high tolerence to pain. Now having laser surgery on my eyes kept me down for a few days in pain…besides not being able to see well.
 
This is a highly individual thing really and you have to be prudent and make your own judgment. I had two wisdom teeth out last year and was in a good amount of pain for weeks afterwards. I can see that the pain might still be intense enough to keep you from Mass on Sunday after two days. Not to mention the fact that if you have to drive to Mass the painkillers you take be such that it is unwise for you to drive. The ones I had were oxycodone which come with this cautionary note: “Oxycodone may impair the mental and/or physical abilities required for the performance of potentially hazardous tasks such as driving a car or operating machinery. The patient using Percocet should be cautioned accordingly.” It’s likely you will be prescribed something similar.

Depending upon how many teeth you have and if you have any complications etc there is a good chance you will miss Mass on Sunday and it will be justified. Make sure you stay upright for the first couple of days/nights. And use the ice as instructed. It will reduce the swelling amazingly.Make extra ice for a couple of days if you have to. Luckily we have a crush button on our ice maker that worked well for making ice packs.Several years ago my two sons had all 4 of their wisdom teeth removed on the same day. I kept them on the couch recliners in an a comfortable reclined but upright position and they had very little swelling. That is until one son decided to lay flat on the second night and he swelled right up. So he stayed on the recliner that night and it was greatly reduced the next day. They took their anti inflammatory meds too.
 
See how you feel on Sunday. If you are sick, stay home. If you are taking pain killers, stay home unless you have someone else to drive you.
 
I’d tend to the contrary - talk to your priest about your situation and either arrange a home visit in case you’re not up to leaving home, or seek a dispensation, that way you won’t need to worry about it.
 
I had my wisdom teeth removed twice. Two of them were removed when I was pregnant, because they were decaying. A few years later, the other two were removed. Both times, I did not use any anesthesia other than novocaine, because I throw up with many anesthesias. (When I had my second foot surgery a few months ago, I was given some kind of anesthesia that didn’t make me throw up–it was wonderful!)

With the first two wisdom teeth, I ended up with a complication called “dry sockets.” If you get this, you will be unable to attend Mass. You’ll barely be able to do anything except lie in bed and try to bear the extreme pain. Even watching TV hurts. This was some of the worst pain I’ve ever experienced, even worse than labor pain.

With the second two, I didn’t have dry sockets, but I felt pretty sore, and I wasn’t eating much because the blood that I had swallowed during the surgery made me nauseous and throw up.

My daughters have both had wisdom teeth removed, and both of them were still pretty sick and painful two days later. My older daughter threw up a lot of blood, too.

A lot of the reason why you feel sick and weak is that you won’t be eating much, and two days of a virtual fast makes many people feel weak and headachey. For goodness sakes, if you are addicted to caffeine in any way, start tapering off now so that when Friday comes, you won’t have a caffeine headache on top of everything else.

I agree, stay home if you feel sick. That’s what Holy Mother Church, in her wisdom and compassion, tells us to do. You are not sinning by missing Mass due to sickness or surgery.

And if you develop a fever, it’s an emergency with wisdom teeth surgery. Dental infections can cause heart complications (endocarditis) due to the normal flora of the mouth attacking the heart valves. Call the dentist immediately.
 
It depends on how your body responds to the surgery, anesthesia and the meds. My husband had all four of his wisdom teeth surgically removed and he was in lots of pain for a few days. He could barely open his mouth and couldn’t eat solid foods for at least a week. He was able to attend mass but could not receive communion, but I know others where they had a difficult time a couple days later and were basically in bed. I believe if you really can’t get out of bed because of how ill you are from the surgery, then you do have a good reason for not attending mass. See how you feel on Sunday before making the decision. You could end up feeling ok enough to at least attend the mass.
 
I guess I was pretty lucky…As I stated I didn’t have much pain at all. The last one I had removed I thought I had dry socket but when I went to the doctor said I was just sore. It took him 1/2 hour to get the tooth out and eventually had to break it in half…so the pain was from all the pushing and pulling. That pain lasted two weeks but tylenol did the trick. Other than that I was not really held up in bed or anything. It was done on a friday and I was back doing volunteer work Saturday morning…although I did leave the soup kitchen a bit early because they thought I looked bad.
 
I had my wisdom teeth removed and had very little pain. I vomited from the anesthesia and that was the worst part. I took Tylenol for the pain and went back to work the next day. This sort of thing varies so much from person to person. One of my friends had the complication of dry sockets and she said it was very painful.
 
There is nothing wrong with missing Mass if you are really sick - I would even say you should miss Mass if you are really sick. Since it will only likely be one Sunday you miss, if that, you could always go mid-week if you feel the need. In most scenarios you would feel much better by then.

When I got mine out, I fainted the next day, and was feeling low for a few days after. I only missed two days of school though.
 
So… What happened? How are you feeling now? Were you able to et to mass? Hope you’re better by now.

First of all you are excused from being at Mass if you are healing and it would be problematic for you to get to Mass for any number of reasons. Relax…

Within the last 90 days I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed and I’m in my 40’s – not a great combination. It went very well. I took a large (only now do I know) dose of prescribed Valium an hour before I went to the oral surgeon to relax me – and it worked it felt like I had a buzz from drinking alcohol. I arrived, they shot my gums up with locals (no real pain)

Once I was numbed-up with went to work. I prayed a Chotki, two Rosaries and a Divine Mercy Chaplet. I stopped them one time so I could “itch” my nose. No pain.

I got a ride home and even though I had filled the pain killer prescription he gave me a last minute script for stronger painkillers so I had to go drive and have it filled – I should have had it called in. I didn’t end-up using any of them.

All in all not a bad ordeal. Less than the anxiety I felt before the surgery and certainly less than the pain I felt when I accidently water-piked pineapple pulp into an unknown cavity in one of them…
