My family moved to a new home and we are unpacking, going and back and forth to clear out our old home, need to repaint our old home, and trying to settle in and organize while we have time off from work/school over the Memorial Day holiday. The work is endless! Is it a sin to miss Mass as we are in the thick of this process?

Since you have a pretty good reason for missing mass this week, my hunch is, no, not a mortal sin. If you miss for selfish motives, laziness for instance, it would be a different story.

Let me ask this. Did you have the means to go to mass by yourself, or are you reliant on someone else to take you there? Did you have a possible opportunity to go that you skipped because it was merely inconvenient? Things like this can change the gravity of a sin. Whether it is mortal, venial, or not a sin at all. Best to go to confession before your next communion and have a priest make that judgement call.

Welcome to the forums, by the way. 🙂

I’d venture to guess that by giving that one hour to worship God, He’d bless you with the ability to get more done in the remaining time you have before going back to work. Mass isn’t time lost, it’s time invested.

Thank you. I will raise this in confession. Many thanks for your thoughtful response.

Perhaps explain the circumstances to your priest and ask for a dispensation ?

When we had our flood in 2010, our parish was right there being flooded. Our priest called everyone telling them NOT to venture out because of the dangerous conditions. It was a long time before the roads were passable and longer for homes to get to the point where they could be cleaned out. 🤢🤮

Thank you. Is a dispensation something you ask in advance or after?

In advance. I’m sure he’ll be willing to give you one as long as he knows your circumstances. Moving can be very hectic and stressful.
