I’m just getting over a virus, and am still feeling a little sick. It’s cold out, there’s snow on the ground, and there’s still a wintry mix coming down. The only way I have to get to mass is to walk there, which will take me about 20 minutes in the bad weather. Is it OK if I don’t go?

Please stay home if you’re still not feeling well. You are doing an act of charity to your fellow parishoners by not exposing them to your virus. And I don’t think it would be good for you to be out in the cold for 20 minutes in your condition.

A wise priest once advised me that if I was feeling ill enough (or contagious enough) that I would stay home from a social gathering I wished to attend, that I was ill enough to stay home from Mass. And if I were just getting over a virus and had to walk 20 minutes to get there, you bet I’d stay home today, esp. if I had to walk through the snowstorm we had last night! Rest up, take care of yourself, and get well soon.

Yes, this is good advice. To the OP, you can make a spiritual Communion at home.

Would there be any other event that you would go to? If no, then it’s okay to miss mass.

The mere fact that you would ask such a question suggests your acknowledgement of the importance of the Mass. It would seem that someone like yourself would know more than anyone that you need to stay home and offer prayers for those who don’t go simply because they have something “better” to do.

God Bless and Merry Christmas…teachccd 🙂

I think it’s ok to miss Mass if you are sick or caring for a sick relative, travel conditons are dangerous or you are aiming at it with a gun. 🙂

if you’re sick or you can’t get there, you don’t have an obligation, and we are supposed to use our own prudential judgement, and not have to agonize about this decision.
