I saw a few threads on this, but not this specific situation. We were traveling back from Ireland last Sunday. We had to get to the airport at 8Am and there were no masses prior to that in Ireland. We were planning on attending mass when we got back home as there is a 5PM mass at a local parish. We went to the 5 PM mass and sat in the church awaiting for the mass with about 35 other people. Someone eventually got restless and looked in the bulletin to find out that that particular mass had been cancelled and there was no other mass in our area.

Have we committed a mortal sin by not attending mass last week? My though is no, as it was our intention to go and had no way of knowing the mass we would be attending was cancelled.

Just wanted to get some (name removed by moderator)ut. I do intend on going to confession this week anyway.

Thanks!

Mortal Sin !!??? My God, God is not a executioner. You’ve done whatever it takes to go to mass, what is the trouble? Were it the IRS, you’ld be in trouble, for they dont look at inner feelings: it is spit the bucks and finish.

God’s ways are not our ways.

What i do when I am in your situation: I put myself in one of the thousands of masses celebrated around the world. when it is communion, I ask the Lord to come into me (Spiritual Communion) and I pray, and I meditate on the Old Testament, and I meditate on the Gospel. Done.

Sometimes in Portugal, the crowd is so big you’ve to stay outside the Church. You cnnot hear nor see. The situation is similar…

Please, God is your Father:thumbsup:

No, it is not a mortal sin, especially since you were at the church. One of the conditions of mortal sin was not met: deliberate consent. You had intentions of going, but it just didn’t work out. It could have happened to anyone.🙂

No. You would have to have full consent of the will in order for anything to be a mortal sin. You willed to go to Mass, not to skip it.

That said, given that Mass is very important, you might have planned to attend a Saturday vigil in Ireland or arranged your travel so that your attendance at Mass was not dependant on one particular Mass being celebrated. It is something to think about for the future, but not on pain of mortal sin. 🙂

You are dead on the mark. You did not commit a mortal sin. In fact, you did not commit any sin, as you made an honest effort and through no fault of your own, you were unable to go.

When you find yourself in a situation like that, try to give back to the Lord what you can on His day. Maybe spend some time reading scripture or in prayer? And if possible, try to go to daily mass once during the week.

None of those are required, of course, but its just a nice way to show God you still what you could.

No you did not commit a sin.

However, I’m curious as to why you didn’t go to the Saturday evening Mass. That fulfills the Sunday obligation then you wouldn’t have had to panic on Sunday.🙂

Thanks for all the responses and confirming my thoughts. We didn’t go to Saturday night vigil as we expected to be going to the 5PM Sunday. Had no clue they would cancel it as they had never done this in the past. May God bless you all.
