They stopped around 5:30. The vigil is at 5. Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt 🙂 it was like we decided on Friday to skip mass that weekend or anything.
Ahhh so you decided to skip Mass on Friday???

LaSainte: It would appear to me that you and your husband did have a valid reason for missing Mass. I think your priest would know better than the rest of us. I assume from reading your posts that Sunday was the only day you could hang a door and that you didn’t feel you could safely take both children to Mass. I gather that the church is at least a half-hour drive from your house. After doing construction work would you have been able to drive safely?

I love to attend Mass and I don’t have children and I live close to the church so I never miss Mass. And I would cheerfully offend my relatives to do so and would change my job if it involved missing Mass more than once a year. I hope you and your husband are able to attend Mass regularly in the future.😉

Of course if it had been just hubby and me we would have gone. The kids had been in he car for 6 hours on Friday, then dinner, then at their godfather’s graduation and dinner all day Saturday (remember, ages 2 and 9 months). Sunday they were DONE. The city is unfamiliar to us and the roads are touh to navigate. No kids, no problem, but they really DID need time to unwind and play on Sunday before driving 6 hours back home on Monday, and hubby and I made the executive decision to spend the day letting them play and unwind rather than have another stressful day trying to navigate a strange city before getting on the road to go back home.
Again, this Catholic would have taken all that into consideration and thought better of not going to an event that was so taxing on my children. AND caused me to miss Mass. But my priorities are much different than yours apparently.

Now that I’ve worked it out in my head, I am ok with it. Was in New Orleans last weekend for a friend’s graduation and didn’t make mass either-I wasn’t aware that we were required to go in that case. I thought with being in a hotel and having to drive around a strange city with 2 kids that were beside themselves with exhaustion that we would both be dispensed, but I guess not??? Oh well, at least it wasn’t deliberate in either case, so no mortal sin there.
I had given up on posting on this again until I read this silly response.

You probably can’t walk two blocks in. New Orleans without finding a parish to go to mass at. I was in New Orleans with my family 4 weeks ago and I managed to go to mass every day. I am the only practicing Catholic in my family so instead of inconveniencing them, I got up for a 7:00 am mass and walked there. It was hard getting up that early but it was worth it because I wanted to worship.

There is a BIG dofference between impossible something being impossible and someone being lazy.

Being negligent is deliberate. It’s making a choice to do the wrong thing.

whether you had a “valid” excuse or not is something to be discussed with the priest but I would think that such a busy prep weekend, it would seems that it would have been nice to go to mass just to get a break, and if your family didn’t go to church, have them take a break too with the young children, maybe at a McDonald’s playscape. It becomes a somewhat dangerous president when people start to miss mass do to “busy circumstances” which can include many things such as yours, kid’s sports schedules, big family get together, etc. Once you head down that road, other busy circumstances will pop up and the justification will just continue. If you always determine to go to mass, you will no matter what unless undo sicknesses, car problems, weather, etc happen. Tiredness and “business” really are a slippery slope to go down.
