Missing Mass??

I think I already know the answer, but I want to make sure. I live in West Tennessee and our area has just been hit with a massive amount of snow for the area. Around 4-5 inches where I live. DH isn’t sure if we will be able to make it to Mass tomorrow. Of course, my question is, is this a reason to miss my Sunday obligation? I’ve not missed a Mass since becoming Catholic, and I absolutely can’t stand it if I might have to. But if the weather is too bad, is it ok? We are going to see what the morning brings, and if we can make it we are going, but I’m afraid it will still be bad since we here in West Tennessee didn’t really expect this amount of snow and the road crews weren’t really ready for it. Help!
 
If weather conditions would make it dangerous to travel to church, you are not obligated to attend Mass.
 
I’m here in NW Arkansas and I went to Vigil Mass; thinking that the morning might be too icy. Well, I am glad I got there and back as I slipped and slid on the way home tonight. I called my Mom who usually goes in the morning, to advise her it may be too dangerous. We haven’t had any road crews out either. If the weather is too dangerous you are under no obligation. Our temperature is expected to stay below freezing, but I think the roads are still warm enough that it isn’t too bad. Memphis temps should get higher tomorrow and perhaps one can make it to a Mass later in the morning…or an afternoon/evening Mass.
 
I’m hoping it will get better by morning. We live about 1.5 hours north of Memphis and I have to drive 35 minutes to Mass in another town since we have no Catholic church here. So it’s not very feasible to get to Memphis and back home if the weather stays bad, but that is a thought just in case. We just measured and have about 8 inches and the snow’s still coming. I’m still praying that our 2 scraper trucks (yes, we only have 2) will get the roads out of town clear!! 🙂 Thanks for your quick replies.

Just sit down and light a candle and read your missal if you are snowed in. God will understand.

Massive amount of snow 4-5 in, ? If you truly cannot safely get there there is no obligation.

No 4-5 inches isn’t massive. But it can be hazardous no matter where you live. I’ve lived in NW AR for many years and my northern friends always laugh at me when I mention we’ve had snow and it’s pretty much shut everything down. When they hear it’s only a few inches they really have a field day with that. Well we don’t have the road crews you all do to clear it away. And if that 4 or 5 inches is sitting on top of a sheet of ice, well you go to Mass in that up and down several steep hills and see how far you get, without sliding into a ditch. :rolleyes:

I’m from Cleveland, OH area 12-15 inches is not unusual in the snow belt east of Cleveland. I love the white stuff!!! I did live outside (east) of Seattle for a number of years and you don’t want to tackle a hill even with 2 inches in the city there.

I visited my sister once in NW Arkansas. I don’t like driving on those roads when they are clear and dry. :bigyikes: 😃

No, it’s not massive in most places, but it is here in West TN where we get snow probably once every 3 years. Actually, we ended up getting 8-13 inches in most places. At our house it was about 11. We haven’t gotten this much snow in probably 15 years. And it wasn’t expected. The forecast was calling for at most 3 inches. It was a blizzard to us here! But I do understand what you are saying, Br. Rich. In most places, 4-5 inches is no big deal.

Just an update on this morning, when DH backed the car out this morning when we thought we would try to get to Mass, it got stuck in the drive way and he had to dig it out. We did end up trying to get to the 12:30 Spanish Mass, but when we got there, it had apparently been cancelled. You could tell that we had Mass at either 8:00 or 10:30 but not many people showed up at all. The parking lot still had lots of undisturbed snow. And as far the road conditions, they were terrible. At noon, when we were on our way, we were driving on the main highway between my house and church and the road crews were still out. We saw many cars on the side of the road and we slid several times. So it’s safe to say that we would not have been able to get there this morning. Here in southwest Tennessee, we just don’t have the equipment to make the road safe very fast when something like this happens.

I apologize, I completely burst out laughing when I read 4-5 inches. I’m from minnesota and we wouldn’t even consider shoveling with that small amount. I apologize again:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

These comments do go to show that it has to be an individual decision as to if it safe and reasonable to try, and when it’s time to retreat and put another log on the fire and say a Rosary.
